Thanks heaps Pharma - so For just Mag Chloride and Water I currently do 45% Mag Cl and 55% Water - so If I make enough for 120 ml bottle approx 71 g weight Water and 59 g Mag Cl) If I do the one with MSM then 53% Water, 37% Mag Cl and 10% MSM.

So if I used some hydrosol or Aloe Vera (1X) juice to replace some of the water component would I need a preservative? Sorry for so many questions!

  • This may be of interest (or not!) (PDF) Anomalous Viscosity Behavior in Aqueous Solutions of Hyaluronic Acid (researchgate.net) and I was advised by a highly respected Cosmetic Chemist this when I asked about when to inforpoate HA into my formula
My questions was - All the
formula’s I have seen with Hyaluronic acid 1% solution I I use your Company’s) have it in the heated water phase and I then usually use a purpose
hand blender at first stage of mixing when combining my oil and water phases.
So is this wrong to do?”
    Answer

“The 1% HA we sell is actually designed to use in the end
phase but you can add it into the heating phase.  It is not wrong to do
    either.
     “

Cheers Squinny (and sorry if this confuses things but the creams I have made have had no issues by adding HA to the heated Water phase).

Thanks for sharing that info Ketchito appreciate it. Is there somewhere I can read about the restrictions for D5? (not that it will impact my products as only for myself but I may buy more now in case I cant get easily later). Cheers

Thanks Ketchito I dont plan to sell just for me and maybe family members if it turns out ok. Out of interest what % of Cyclopentasiloxane and Dimethicone do you use in your formula approx?
Also is the restriction an American thing or worldwide (I’m in Australia and also dont sell any of  my products and only do on very small scale ) - And sorry ignorant here what is Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) restriction about - sorry dont know what (D5) means either.

    ketchito said:

Indeed, it’s an anhydrous formula. We have a similar one, but we’ll need to reformulate it due to inforcement of Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) restriction, which will be a hard thing to do because of the sensorial and volatility of D5. If it’s for personal use, you’ll be fine, but consider that restriction if you plan to sell it.

@Graillotion @jemolian nice point to inform because shipment will increase exponentially the price of ingredient.

Thanks Fekher. I use my total cost of an ingredient incl shipping cost when I calculate how much it costs me to make a product. Then I work out if I want to try make that product or not. I only make stuff for me, family and a few friends so I only ever want to purchase small quantities. If the quality of this place in Thailand is good and service good I’ll use again - If not well I only spent a few hundred $ so wont break the bank. Cheers

@Squinny if you are using air shipment, then the shipping cost will be expensive since it has been on the rise.

Thanks Jemolian - yes it was more expensive than I expected but in the scheme of things the order was worthwhile. Cheers :)

Grapefruit22 you are a legend! I looked at myrecipes.com.shop as per your link and wow found so many ingredients I havent been able to source in small quantites like this place. So have just made an order and waiting for shipping costs and even with those will be much cheaper than me buying this stuff in my own country. Brilliant thanks heaps for sharing.

I learned the hard way….when trying to order from them.  If you order 1 gram…or 500…the shipping fee is the SAME!  So when you place your order…get as CLOSE to 500 grams of product as possible.  This will be the most efficient way to spread the shipping cost over all goods.

It will stair-step up from there….so you have to ask for their shipping grid…if you are North of 500 grams.

    Aloha.

Yes thanks for that agree. The shipping cost was quite expensive (equal to the products purchased - mind you I sent a query after I got their quote and they did reduce it by about 300 BHT - Anyway for a lot of the ingredients I bought they ended up much cheaper than the only place I found previously in Australia for those particular ingredients and when I calculate the cost of Triethyl Citrate for example (I did get 500 g ) it worked out to be a 10th of the price of the place I bought previously in Australia. - So for me I bought a lot of stuff to play with and cant wait for my parcel to arrive. Thanks all appreciate everyone’s views. The ingredients are only for my personal a max of 500 g is what I was after. I guess it depends on where you are too and currency conversion etc. Cheers all :)

Dont know but the only Oil I can see is Argan Oil and likely below or equal to 1%  and the other ingredients before that are likely all Water or Glycerin based.

Hi there right or wrong the way I make my HA solution (based on 100 g) is weight 98 g Distilled Water + add 1g Plantaserve (mine is Phenoxyethanol 90%, Ethylhexylglycerin 10%). Mix this until combined. Then I weight (spinkle) 1 g HA Powder and then I let it hydrate by itself for a few hours (cover beaker in clingfilm). After a few hours I then mix with a mini-blender and then leave sit again for a few hours - by then mine is a clear thickish gel/liquid. I bottle it and keep in fridge.

Yes thanks G - I did just that this morning and was advised along the composition sheet which is useful to know going forward - But I love this particular supplier and they are always helpful and forthcoming if you ask for extra info. Unfortunately I have to source a lot of other ingredients they don’t supply elsewhere. FYI the ratio is 30% Cetyl and 70% Stearyl of the Cetearyl I am using.

Hi Mark - Just looked and my Supplier (repacker) and it doesnt say the ratio for the Cetyl/Stearic %’s in their Cetearyl Alcohol - What ratio you listed above makes for a thicker product? (Mine does make lovely thick cream when I use around 2.8% ( I do one with OliveM 1000 at 4.8% and Cetearyl Alc at 2.8% and it is a lovely thickness and skin feel for me) - But open to suggestions on what would make it better. Cheers again

Maybe to make it thinner (Mark please correct me if I’m wrong just speaking from personal experience making creams and lotions) I find Cetyl Alcohol rather than Cetearyl Alcohol makes for a thinner product (Or perhaps try BTMS-25 which has Cetearyl Alcohol in it already)?

July 12, 2022 at 4:14 am in reply to: Formula Help: My Cleansing Balms Rinse Off Is Awful!

I have never seen a formula like this - where did you get it from? There is a lot of waxes in your formula and according to one data sheet for Ceresin Wax says” Incompatibilities - Ceresin is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents. It is compatible with most animal, vegetable, and mineral waxes, as well as mineral oil and petrolatum.  10% of the other wax (sorry I hadnt heard of so had to google) - seems to be for leave on products as it says Recommended Products w/ Microcrystalline Wax:

L’Oreal Colour Riche LipstickShiseido Bio Performance Super Restoring CreamProcyte Ti-Silc Sunscreen SPF 60 with Antioxidants
I would revisit the formula or find a product you like commercially and try emulate that or do you want to use the particular ingredients you have in your formula because you have already bought them?
Is it for your skin only or are you wanting to sell? Happy to help but not sure where to begin. I have made a few cleansing balms to test for myself and havent liked any of them - But I have recently been making a Creamy Wash off cleanser and also a cleansing wash-off gel and I have started using both - Just need to find a way to combine the 2 and I’d have a perfect combo - so lots more testing for me also. ( I have Rosacea so need gentle cleanser) -
Anyone else got a good formula to try?

Yes I definitely would not use homemade fresh pineapple juice in anything either (I don’t believe Pineapple juice is the same as Pineapple extract ). I have used Niacinamide (Usually around 4% and I now put it in the cool-down phase - it dissolves easily and mixes in fine - as it can be heat sensitive above 70 degrees C) in my face and body creams/lotions and I don’t know about ‘brightening’ as such but I love it as an ingredient. Since I’ve started making my own creams and potions my skin has improved out of sight. I’ll never go back to over the counter and knowing how much I can make them for makes it worthwhile for me. Let us know how your product goes once you make it and if actually does have a ‘brightening’ effect or just makes your skin look and feel better. :)

PS I would just start small and make 50 to  mls at a time until you discover the scents you like or see what sprays are currently on market and see what scents work together etc. before looking at doing something commercially.

I make a Pillow spray (which is same concept as a room spray) which I use Floral Waters, Distilled Water, Essential Oils, Polysorbate 20 (mix approx 4 to 5% of total amount (ie if you are making 100 ml bottle then 4 to 5 mls) plus a preservative - It is just a matter of weighing your liquids (Water, Floral Water into beaker 1. Then into beaker 2 add your Oils (you will need to experiment with what aroma you are trying to create) and the Polysorbate 20. Then slowly mix in Beaker 2 to beaker 1 and stir slowly until most of the Polysorbate/Oil mix is mixed int your waters. Then I rinse out the remaining Poly/OIl beaker with the mixture in Beaker 1. It seems strange but when you do it this way your Spray will be clear and not cloudy.
For my Pillow Spray I use Lavender, Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage and Rose Geranium (totals around 1% of product). Another nice combo is Rose Geranium, Lavender, Lemon and Sandalwood.
There a lots of recipes online so it depends on what aroma’s you want to create and like - everyone is different. Go onto sites that sell quality essential oils and see if they have suggestions on what oils combine well together - If starting out just buy some of the cheaper oils that have an uplifting fragrance like Sweet Orange,Lemongrass, etc.
Also depends on what room you want to spray - For instance I make a spray inspired by Poo Pouri for the bathroom and use Bergamot, Lemongrass and Lemon Ess OIls. (Poo Pourri sells for around $15 here and I make it for $2). Anyway if you want more info let me know. Cheers and hope this helps.
