Please, how can I incorporate pineapple juice extract to my body cream formulation?

At what phase and what percentage please?

    Thanks in anticipation.

You should be able to get some information from your supplier (or did you make it yourself?) The notes from my supplier for a Pineapple Gycerine based extract advises: Use:  1-5% in your formula. Add at the end of manufacturing once the temperature has reduced to 50C or less to ensure the full action of the extract remains.  Pineapple extract is sensitive to heat and extremes of pH so while it can be a great addition to an AHA based formula it would be best to keep the final pH to between 4.5-5 rather than more acidic.

    Solubility:  Water soluble extract.

Water soluble. Add to water based products after cooling.  Not soluble in oil but can be used in an emulsion.

Whenever I add herbal type extract I use up to 5% of total - depending if I have any other ingredients for cooldown besides a preservative etc. So I say try a small batch (100 g max and see how it goes as it will depend on what else in in your cream!). Ensure you have good preserving system - you may want to check with the real chemists here for that and if so you may need to advise what else is in your formula and what the cream is to be used for (moistursing, exfolliating, cleansing etc). Cheers

Thanks a lot, the cream is brightening cream. I’m using, papaya oil, carrot oil, lanolin, glycerine, limonene, perfume, cocoa butter, herbal water, Emulsifier and Co-emulsifier, methylparaben, sodium metabulsulfite, propylene glycol, C12-15.

No worries. Out of interest what is it that makes the cream brightening? HOw does it brighten? Is it for your face?

Body cream, not face cream. I’m using the following actives as brightening actives:

    Niacinamide
    N-acetyl glucosamine
    Giga white
Licorice, I’m adding licorice to protect against free radicals.

The idea behind Pineapple Extract is that it may contain some trace bromelain in the extract to provide exfoliation.  In reality it’s just a claim ingredient that won’t really do much, if anything.  Just add 1% to your water phase.  Bromelain itself smells strongly like the sewer.

Thanks alot, can I squeeze the natural juice and add to the water phase in 1% myself?

That’s up to you, but I am not a proponent of using unprocessed food stuffs in cosmetic products.  I would advise against it.  Like I said, it is just a claim ingredient for your label, it will have no effect in your product.

Okay sir. That means no need using it, will use water to replace it. Thanks

Yes I definitely would not use homemade fresh pineapple juice in anything either (I don’t believe Pineapple juice is the same as Pineapple extract ). I have used Niacinamide (Usually around 4% and I now put it in the cool-down phase - it dissolves easily and mixes in fine - as it can be heat sensitive above 70 degrees C) in my face and body creams/lotions and I don’t know about ‘brightening’ as such but I love it as an ingredient. Since I’ve started making my own creams and potions my skin has improved out of sight. I’ll never go back to over the counter and knowing how much I can make them for makes it worthwhile for me. Let us know how your product goes once you make it and if actually does have a ‘brightening’ effect or just makes your skin look and feel better. :)

@M@MarkBroussard Currently Bromelain is being promoted as a replacement for Papain in skin lightening. Do you think these two are comparable or can be used interchangeably?
