I am sure it has something to do with the calculation. I have a formula (it has been stable at the room temperature for the last 7 months) emulsified with 3% Glyceryl Oleate and 1% of Polysorbate 60 and it is O/W. Oil pase is 10%. Recalculate the HLB.
-
I have just checked my formulas, I use 8% in one of o/w lotions (total oil phase is 20% that inlude other esters and fatty alcohols). It is used in lip balms as a first ingredient:
https://uk.loccitane.com/natural-shea-awarded-best-lip-balm,83,1,29776,271948.htm#s=75880
https://incidecoder.com/products/nivea-pure-and-natural-milk-and-honey-lip-balm
So, you can definitely use more than 6%.
-
Post the formula. How much cetearyl alcohol are you using?
-
Think of it as of vegetable oil. It’s a medium viscosity ester. Very multifunctional. You can use more than 6%.

PVP is a film former. Aristoflex AVC is a film former too. What are you trying to make?

MemberMarch 26, 2019 at 1:49 pm in reply to: Potassium Sorbate/Sodium benzoate and testingI would really avoid formulas that describe quantities as “4 drops vanilla 10-fold essential oil and 2 “blobs” benzoin essential oil“.
Also, making a stable product is not about the preservatives only. You need to make sure you use deionised water, add EDTA, add antioxidants, avoid using oils that are too high in iodine value (which is actually ok for this formula), use an emulsification system appropriate for the formula, avoid difficult to preserve ingredients and many other things.

I provided several links in the very first comment and addressed what is wrong with your formula. You have to read if you want to learn. This forum is for helping with something you cannot find online. Read the knowledge base, update the formula and you will get more help.

@Belassi, this is not a true old school. A true old school is to measure by the price, like “get 3 pence worth of borax..”
-
I probably should have explained it better. I meat to use % to write initial formula, that should be equal to 100%, then convert to grams. I shared a link to a free calculator that does it, but I personally prefer working in Excel.
-
1) Thou shalt not measure formula in grams. Download this:
http://makingskincare.com/recipe-calculator/
2) To understand how much of each ingredient to use and how to formulate in general read this:
http://makingskincare.com/how-to-formulate-like-a-pro/
3) Germall plus - great choice. And it is safe if used as recommended by the supplier. To understand how much read this:
http://makingskincare.com/preservatives/
4) Water infused with whatever nonsense, silk, oatmeal and all other “tasty-sounding” goodness - bug food. They do not add anything to the formula, just add glycerin or any other humectant. A good moisturiser should have i) humectants ii) emollients iii) occlusive agents.
5) Yes, you do need antioxidant unless you are willing to replace your oils. Why did you choose those oils?
6) Essential oils… Not so good for skin, but if you insist that it should smell nice (I would say why if you don’t sell it?) keep it as low as possible (.3% max). -
Thank you Perry!

MemberMarch 19, 2019 at 7:15 am in reply to: Online store based in the US sells dangerous cosmeticsThe market is huge. But most people are sceptical enough not to buy eye drops promising to make brown eyes blue. At least this is what I hope.

Soap with hydroquinone that “Boost skin whitening result by 1000%”…
I don’t know what bothers me the most; grammar mistakes, the 1000% claim (I just want to hit that person with a math book) or hydroquinone in a soap that they recommend to store in the fridge because hello!!!! it oxidizes!!!Where is FDA????

You should understand the science behind calculating surfactants active matter.

MemberMarch 15, 2019 at 6:18 am in reply to: Switching betaine to sultaine (stability issue)Xanthan gum is anionic, CAPB changes it’s charge to cationic at pH lower than 6. You have a conflict of charges here so xanthan separates. I haven’t worked with sultaine but assuming all amphoterics are similar elevate pH to 7 and see whether it passes stability.

Bad idea, henna turns grey hair orange (orange like a fruit)

Dandruff is caused by either immune system issues or fungus infection, not bacteria. You don’t have a proper preservative system in your formula.

MemberMarch 12, 2019 at 9:18 pm in reply to: Petrolatum and paraffin oil cause cancer? As I mentioned the misconception came from technical grade mineral oil containing certain impurities. that grade is never used in skincare. Just get a purified mineral oil that is intended for use in cosmetics.

Things that this crowd calls ‘not natural’ in the majority of cases have much better performance.
