I concur with @Perry44 based on my professional experience. The predominant segment of the mainstream market commonly incorporates preservatives with minimal resistance. While there is a modest inclination among consumers to opt for “paraben-free” products, this choice is often driven more by marketing strategies than a genuine awareness of associated risks.

Although certain niche markets may exhibit heightened awareness, they currently represent a minority. Given that a substantial number of Forum members have originated from DIY and online sources, their perspectives may be influenced by an undefined natural standard, chemophobia, and occasionally, misinformation. It’s important to note that anhydrous products, such as saponified soaps, possess inherent preservative properties due to reduced free water content and pH levels.

For Formulators and Chemists, collaboration with clients to discern their target demographic is crucial. Establishing a transparent raw material standard tailored to the specific audience is paramount. It’s a misconception that “natural” equates to being entirely preservative-free. Many effective preservatives are permissible under these standards. Failing to preserve a product could compromise customer safety and potentially expose the manufacturer to liability.

These insights derive from anecdotal experiences across the market. For instance, one client recently completed an initial production run of 2500 units, while another is in the midst of a substantial run of 375,000 pieces.

Unfortunately, the label must reflect the actual contents of the Product.

There are many factors and it comes down to Process Engineering.

Is the Formula stable to begin with as demonstrated through stability testing? In an effective organization, this would be a yes.

What incipients may need to be added to fix the product, how does your QA Program address this change, and will it make your labeling inaccurate? Anecdotally I once saw someone add an unmeasured and unclaimed amount of Sepigel 305 (laughingly called the “batchmasters friend”) into a batch which I then refused to clear from QA/QC Hold.

Multiple other issues you can identify that may be process-related or plant specific.

In the end, be conservative. In the end, you need to weigh any issues of noncompliance over any fungible losses.

This is why “natural” is a horrible term and one people should further define and qualify. Decyl Glucoside? (see Perry’s multiple posts about surfactant trees). Don’t let a horrible marketing term limit your performance. You are missing many opportunities to improve the Formula while remaining compliant with US Natural and Retailer standards.

It’s unlikely that you would keep the ZnO and TiO2 suspended in just an Aloe Vera Gel, resulting in inconsistent coverage.

  • We primarily use UL Prospector and have purchased a subscription with Regulator access. I have also found UL Prospector has the best sampling option.

Knowde has a beautiful interface and has products not on UL Prospector in some cases, BUT in our experience, they are horrible with sample requests.

SpecChem is extensive but clunky. Also, most of their webinars require payment. We use UL Prospector for educational materials (webinars, knowledgebase articles) for training.

There is another platform we use infrequently (Novi https://www.noviconnect.com/). It is weak for Product Development, but great for material searches and would be best suited for a Procurement person.

I have found that anecdotally working with Dermatologists and their products that skin without an underlying disease state will not generally have an issue. I did have a client contact me due to an Adverse Incident in a Peds patient with Eczema who could not tolerate saponified soaps. The Dermatologist did relay that he has seen this issue numerous times in the Clinic.

As a Formulator I am biased toward surfactant systems. It will open you up to a great deal more options regarding water-soluble raw materials.

Just from personal experience, “made in small batches” could be a barrier for some Commercial buyers down the road. I have several buyers who look at the scalability of a line as a metric of success. To them “small batches” implies back-orders and out-of-stock items. I had this exact conversation with a buyer from Detox Market in the past.

What material are the bottles made from? It sounds like “panelling” which is especially common in PET bottles.

Honestly, you have little to no liability in revealing the “two ingredients” as you will have to list them in the ingredient declaration regardless. It’s the percentage usage that could be protected IP. It would be helpful to at least reveal their INCI’s as they could have an impact on the Formulation.

We have helped >20 lines get certified as USDA NOP Organic certifications. Unless you have a formalized, recorded, and well-designed SOP/QA program in place, you will need to get one in place. The USDA NOP Certifying bodies will insist upon these prerequisites in my experience.

  • You can get these results from Amazon sales searches. That will at least give you a workable metric. Good Luck with the Beginner groups, they will frustrate you to no end.

You fill it to the declared weight/volume on the front panel of the label, not visually. You can easily calculate a check weight. In Commercial manufacturing, we will perform check weights every X number of times for QC.

    A. Lanolin is being used as the W/O emulsifier here. B. There is no absolute level of Glycerin that predictably self-preserves. Glycerin can be used as an adjunct as it decreases free water but free water needs to be tested for. C. This is a very low-water product as it is a W/O emulsion. Challenge Testing would still likely be performed. https://cosmetics.specialchem.com/inci-ingredients/lanolin

As many have said, a “minimalistic” approach would be ineffective. Sunscreens are drugs and multiple ingredients contribute to the Drug Benefits. I would do some involved reading as it is more involved of a topic than the Forum could effectively cover. We have Professional Seminars dedicated to just these products.

You must deliver a safe product. The Cosmetic Market has platelet count standards. As such it’s unacceptable. I have had wholesale buyers kick back products over the issue.

After tracking down a contamination issue we had with a product years ago, we narrowed it down to the Hydrosols and their storage after opening the primary container. We solved the issue by dating the Hydrosols upon opening and using them within 56 days (based on microtesting). It solved the issue. At the time we found multiple reports of contamination from this storekeeping of opened Hydrsols.

  • Yes I am referring to David’s Book on Preservation from Allured Publishing. For an even deeper dive (but one which will require University training to follow effectively) is @PhilGeis ‘s book.

  • It may be too old and the links may be expired. Much of it is covered in his text on preservation. You should get a copy.

I was asking for an Academic citation for the specific statement I put inside the parentheses. I certainly understand the Hurdle technique as we use this almost daily. I understand the principles of preservation, testing, safety substantiation, and cGMP.

having better performance with less side effects (cytotoxicity) as
compared with synthetic ingredients loaded products.”
