    thanks for replying back.

I don’t know if I have explained myself correctly, the dropplets don’t appear on the top of the product, but in the surface of the plastic bottle. I am experiencing condensation of the water content of my cream.

I have xanthan gum and guar gum so I could try adding one of them. But I would like to understand why or how could be ta thickener solution? Would they act like a water trap? (sorry If I sound stupid).

What I do is heat both oil phase and water phase for 20´low heat, then I add some water to compensate the water loss. After I pour the water phase into the oil phase and I blend with stick blender until the emulsion is formed. I stir from time to time until is cool and I add the preservative and lower the pH. Then I let the product sit all night and store it next day.

  • Thanks for the replies 🙂

Apologies for not mentioning that… I use 0,2% EDTA, 3% glycerine and shea butter is refined.

This is my first time ever using this fragrance and this preservative system. I thought about using Germall Plus but I can’t use it in Europe. That’s why I wanted to give a shoot to this combo and see if it works for me. What I have learned in this group since joining it’s to use antifungi+antibacteria+ chelant

The cream that I normally use, before becoming a DIY, it’s Eucerin. This cream has a 5% panthenol, pH 5 and fragrance in a jar.

I removed EDTA and that did the trick. The emulsion is stable either way using NaOH or EDTA. Granules appear when I use both. I think both react or the higher the pH the more EDTA messes around.

Now I wonder if Liquid Germall plus at .5% is enough or chelant is a must in my recipe.

I use cornstarch to reduce shine and it works for me in a body butter

easiest thing to do it’s to add a rosemary or lavender hydrosol or you have already oils so you could add essential oils as well with the solubiliser you are using.

what I meant to say it´s if there is a chance of water contamination, but the pH of the water in the shower is  neutral. Why would an antifungal work if they are too pH acidic dependent… It’s something that I don’t fully understand.

I am sorry for not explaining myself better, I was also talking about David C. Steinberg, but I just remembered his last name as Spielberg.

It makes totally sense to me to add a preservative to  an anhydrous scrub if there is chance water gets in i, but at the same time I was not sure antifungals were going to work since they are too acidic pH dependant and the pH of the shower is neutral.

On the other hand I read somewhere Spielberg saying that over-preservation is a current problem in cosmetic formulation. I guess everybody tries to play it safe, but what’s so bad about over-preservation?  It’s because microbes might develop resistances or a health issue for consumers?

Thanks for the info I am learning a lot here. I have made the scrub just with sugar, butters, oils and btms (no water content) and I have added phenoxy/ EHG.

@chemicalmatt thanks for replying. I read that glycerine can be used as preservative if used in a high quantity but in the sephora scrubs is not as clear…
On the other hand, I see that Sephora has a strict formulation policy. Not the best site for starters to look into.

  • @PhilGeis is it 1% of Cosgard 221 too much in the hair cream you mean? What I would like to know is  if that’s enough for a good preservative system being pH 5 and 0’1% edta.

I have  relaxed my hair for almost 20 years, two times per year. This year I decided to go natural and not use them anymore. I just decided to embrace my afro hair texture, my scalp is happier, no more burns…

  • I would like to know as well. I am working on a hair cream pH 5. I am using benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic 1%. Is that enough for an effective preservative system? I have seen in the market other hair creams with only Cosgard as Preservative.
Ingredients are  aqua, mango butter, sweet almond oil,  lactic acid, aloe vera and BTMS.

Shall I add a bit of phenoxyethanol  and EDTA to boost the system or just leave it like that? What %?

    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for replying 🙂

.product is a leave-in conditioner. I haven’t had any stability issues with EDTA. I want a pH around 6 , so I tried using sodium phytate as chelant and pH raiser but the emulsion broke straight away. Now with NaOH I have granules, so I will try triethanolamine to see how it goes.

It´s possible to pass PET just with 0,5% Germall plus without chelant??

    My hair is afro 4c.

I have checked the pH of the leave-in products that I buy an the pH is around 6.
