Sodium hydroxide is a pH adjuster

Is it better to replace NaOH with TEA ?

@sven you can exclude Olefin Sulfonate at all and the formula will be chrystal clear (it’s still clear but olefin sulfonate is yellow). But then it would be very difficult to thicken.
I love Sarcosinate. It’s very gentle and easy to work with. Zein protein and HET CAM tests show it’s somewhere in the middle (moderately irritating) but when you mix it with CAPB it becomes very mild.

Have any way to make yellowish AOS clear ?

Thank you. Would you mind elaborating on what you meant by unpleasant?

Not soft and silky , a heavy and hard feeling wet and dry combing .

@Gunther I made a batch with PQ7 2% , it was unpleasant.  Here is a screen shot of Poucher’s text book of perfumes and cosmetics.  He used only .25%PQ7 in his formula.

  • @MarkBroussard Hi Mark , so many thanks . I read this study earlier . This study also described so many benifits of Alovera including healing and curing though I mentioned only cosmetics criteria of Alovera.
” Results of a number of clinical trials suggest that Aloe vera is positively indicated in the treatment of skin disorders. A trial of wound healing management after the full-faced dermabrasion of patients with acne vulgaris demonstrated that the saturation of a standard polyethylene wound gel dressing with Aloe vera significantly reduced time to reepithelization compared to use of the standard dressing alone (Fulton 1990). In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial of Aloe vera or placebo cream in 60 patients with chronic psoriasis, the cure rate in the Aloe vera group was 83% (with no relapses at 12 months of follow-up) compared to only 7% in the placebo group (Syed et al. 1996 ” .
When we use something in cosmetics we consider it’s skin benifits, we do not use it as an active  ingredients of drug.
Though Alovera has many healing benifits but these are not necessarily need for cosmetics.
I just tried to mention it’s cosmetics benifits.

I think #diakarv wanted to have a go at making it from the plant itself, it can be very therapeutic and satisfying. Lets help him try doing it from the plant itself. What filtration method were you using?

Filtration of Alovera gel is very time consuming . At first I used a curd filter , but after straining some drops it was clogged.  Then I take a  net cloth.  It works and I was able to strained 80% of alovera juice. Then I filtered twice with curd filter following strained  with a fine cloth . During the process I followed GMP as much as correctly and consciously.
Mr . Diakrv want to use the juice  without preservative . with only antioxidant like vit E , it will last only 3 to 5 days in a refrigerator.
But I added citric acid after heating process and then add Nabenzoate.  I made a batch of moisturising cream with this Juice and it was very fine  and soothing.

  • @MarkBroussard , thanks for your informative comments.
But I would like to express my view about Alovera  . It is well known that Alovera is a very good astringent , humactant, moisturiser,  it has soothing effect , it is noncomedogenic and very much skin friendly and therapeutic . It has so many virtues .  It is also beneficial to hair also .

It will form a heavy build up . It will make unpleasant  wet and dry conditions.

Without CAPB foaming performance will poor . So keep CAPB in your formula . What is your presevative system ? What about stability ? Is your colour stable at that pH for a long time ?

Thanks a lot Aziz. I’m still searching for CAPB at our markets but I will surely include it. my preservative was initially formaldehyde but on coming here I realized it is no longer supportive so I decided to go with methyl paraben . After long time I do observed slight change in the colour

If you notice a little change in colour , definitely it will turn from green to olive and olive to brownish . That means your formulation is not stable . If you market a substandard product you will not succeed.    So you should look for color which can take that pH .

Decyl glucoside is very difficult to thicken. It is not usually used as a primary surfactant. It can be used as a foam buster but it will descrease viscosity of the product. Decyl glucoside is also quite irritating for many people. The only benefit it has is it supports “natural” claims.
If you look at ingredient list of Palmolive handwash you will see it has quite typical combination of SLES and CABP (that makes it mild):

Water, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Glycerin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Cocamide MEA, Sodium Salicylate, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4, CI 19140, CI 17200, CI 42090.

Decyl glucoside is not even in this list.

To make the story more appealing can he replace citric acid with Lactic Acid ,  add some Plyquatarenium 7 , Alovera juce lemonin and linalool ?
And in case of hand wash perfume selection is a vital one .

Micellar water with less than 2% of surfactant wouldn’t dissolve any makeup. So, I assume most of the micellar waters contain more than 1% .

Miceller water contain solubilizer , volatile oil  , water softner , humactant and perfume . Not only surfactant . Percent of solubilizer is higher than oil .

LABSA and SLES are too low
increase to about 15% LABSA and 5% SLES to get proper viscosity
salt needs to be slowly added in 0.25% increments (dissolved in water) until the proper viscosity builds.
Better yet do a salt curve experiment.
Formalin is banned and a proven carcinogen.

    In my experience 15 % LABSA is too high . 6 to 10% is fine . 5% SLES , 2% CDEA , 3 to 4 % CAPB and NaCl   may give a very good viscosity .

Ok so you are using Avocado in an emulsion but the EO’s must be brought down in %.

In fact EOs are not popular and I have a very limited use . Fragrance oils and perfumes are used most of the times and it is below 1% level .
Pumpkin and cucumber like smell of Avocado is very favourite to me and perhaps it is a good choice for face wash IMO . Thanks a lot .

Why are you using Avocado oil?

Avocado oil has a very good nourishin and moisturising properties . Using in my face cream/wash along with vitamin E oils . Adding it as an aesthetic and story also .

@”Dr Catherine Pratt” Catherine Pratt ,
     Thanks for your advice .
I am making Hand Wash , Shower gel/cream and conditioning Shampoos .
Most of the EOs  affecting viscosity , some affecting less .
In cold process gels I add CAPB after perfumes .
This week I went to chemical market but here Sarcosinates , Glucosides and propanediol  is not available . I have so much limitations .They provide me with RH40 (Polyoxyl castor oil) for transparent gel .
I am using Lavender , Avocado and Rosemery EOs and various fragrances from Phoenix UK . Using fragrance level below 1% .
Can you give some names which EOs affect less the viscosity .

I would use less fragrance too. HEC will not give you the same rheology though. It will be much less gel-like. For a gel you could try a Carbomer like Carbomer EDT2020

Does it make any sense to add fragrance before thickening i e , I add fifty percent of my formula CAPB before adding fragrance and rest fifty parcent and salt after fragrance ?
