If I’m not mistaken DIY bloggers suggested powder at the second ingredient.
And you didn’t state your formulation was meant to be a stick or a paste-like.
Maybe you can try looking at natural lipstick formulations how do they get the glide. You know, I initially thought that the powder amount was high as well. But it doesn’t seem to make the product feel draggy or dry or gritty..would those be the things to look for if the powder amount is too high? Or is this what I should decrease to get better glide?
Good idea about looking at lip stick formulations! I will do some research on that tonight ???? -

Also, hemp oil oxidises very quickly… it smells horrible when it goes rancid. Not sure it’s worth adding to a deodorant product!
Hmmm, very interesting about the Hemp oil…it certainly can be swapped out for a better, more stable oil!
And I do have Babassu oil but after I purchased it, I started reading everywhere that it is nearly identical to coconut oil, only more expensive ????♀️
Thank you for the information!

Because it is an ester, it has a super lite feel…and no greasy after effect. In the lighter of my two creams… (lower oil content) I use it as 1.5%. In a little heavier cream…I use it at 2%. As with ALL things…you just have to experiment until it feels like you imagined it.IPM is a nice lite emollient…but there are many lighter. In creams…I use a cascading effect of emollients (IL +IPM+LL)…basically means…use emollients of different weights…kinda gives a depth to the emollients….hehehe…maybe not so important in deodorant.
Oh wow!! Thank you for this information! It will definitely be helpful to me in this formulation as well as other lotion formulas I am working on -

Some people with drier skin would say 10% is fine. But if you want no oily residue at all 15-20% is a good amount. Same with Cithrol 10 GTIS. I know some people use Olivem 300 quite sucessfully but I can’t comment on % as I haven’t tried that one.Ah, ok. So 20% Polysorbate 80 with 15-20% of a polar ester, like IPM? And then the rest would be made up mostly of non polar emollient(s)? Or were you saying 80% Polysorbate 80 and then 15-20% of a polar ester.. ?
Thank you so much for your help! -

MemberFebruary 15, 2021 at 8:08 pm in reply to: What would add glide to this natural deodorant formula?@Graillotion what percentage should I start off at? And I have Isopropyl Myristate so would that work at least until I get the Lauryl Laurate? Thanks!!

Well, I know that btms-50 already has cetyl alcohol in it (INCI:
Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetyl Alcohol (and) Butylene Glycol) so you typically wouldn’t use more cetyl alcohol with it, at least that’s what I’ve been told. That said, I have seen some products with btms-50 and stearic acid and cetearyl alcohol all in the ingredients listing.
Hope that helps!

the idea is to have perfect %
if too much they tend to dry and strip your skin
if too little they won’t emulsify and rinse off.I believe @ngarayeva001 recommended 20% polysorbate 80.
Thank you!

MemberFebruary 14, 2021 at 4:47 am in reply to: Can we discuss natural vs synthetic fragrance in personal care?Like my dad always told me, you can never please all the people all the time and probably not even some of the people all the time but you may be able to please some of the people some of the time 🙂
@domicanica I too started out wanting to use only natural essential oils to scent my products but quickly learned that there is only a select few essential oils that are appealing, at least to myself and my network of product testers. And like @Graillotion said, scent is the very first thing about your product that people care about and they care about it more than product functionality even a lot of the time! Anyway, I found that most people who are all about the “natural” products seem to be happy with a product that is mostly natural if the only thing synthetic is the fragrance.
But I think that anything can appeal to people if it’s marketed properly 😉 -

MemberJanuary 24, 2021 at 8:08 am in reply to: What is causing an allergic reaction in this mask recipe?@Graillotion good point! Well, specifically for the skin to feel softer post mask at the very least. Ideally i would like to create a pore-minimizing mask that also makes the face feel noticeably softer to the touch…any suggestions?

MemberJanuary 24, 2021 at 7:20 am in reply to: Feedback on my leave-in conditioner formula@Microformulation I put my business to rest because I wanted to focus on starting a family and working 18+ hours a day was not conducive to that goal. I also didn’t want to be in front of my computer that much anymore
I will also take your advice and do my own research on equipment. As far as my dream to start a skincare business, I have every intention of consulting and hiring industry professionals for most of the many different business facets. To be honest, like @Cafe33, I just really am falling in love with formulating! I am super excited to go down this path, one that I’ve had an interest in for many years. I am learning SO MUCH and have so much more to learn! If and when I am finally ready to begin selling a product or products is realistically years away and maybe it won’t happen at all. But either way, I am still having fun and learning new things and am looking forward to what the future holds 🙂

MemberJanuary 23, 2021 at 10:43 pm in reply to: Feedback on my leave-in conditioner formula@Cafe33 thanks for the support! Ironically my last successful business was a web development and graphic design business that I had between 2005-2011 and it allowed me to really grow in a lot of different ways as I had to do virtually everything by myself, of course hiring out jobs beyond my scope. But I did all of my own sales and marketing, as well as web design, development, graphic design, logos, seo, copywriting, and everything in between. After 6 years though, it became a bit too much for me and instead of expanding, I decided to put the business to rest for a while
I do still design and developm websites for friends and family but that’s about it. Well, and I’ll be doing all of my own marketing and website and logo for my future skincare business but I will also have a business partner to share some of the burden! Anyway, I am super excited about this new venture and although I am still pretty nervous about getting into a completely new line of work, I am confident that if I want it badly enough, I will make it happen

MemberJanuary 21, 2021 at 11:38 pm in reply to: What is causing an allergic reaction in this mask recipe?UPDATE: Well, I modified the recipe and removed the strawberry “essential oil” as well as the licorice root extract and btms-50. I kept the rose hydrosol because I have used it in other formulations without any allergic reaction. I did add green tea extract in place of the licorice root…I guess mostly for appeal and to use up the sample that I had  Anyway, no allergic reaction at all!! However I also didn’t notice any particular benefit either…does anyone have a suggestion on what I could add that might add a noticeable benefit..?
@ngarayeva001 I hear what you’re saying…I think masks appeal to a certain demographic and they usually offer some instant noticeable (and short lived) benefit. I know my 19 year old stepdaughter LOVES them!

MemberJanuary 20, 2021 at 9:48 pm in reply to: What is causing an allergic reaction in this mask recipe? This is really disheartening. You would think that legally they wouldn’t be able to claim something is “100% natural” or “organic” if it wasn’t but I suppose that’s a bit of an idealistic way of thinking
Thanks for all the info. It’s incredibly helpful!! -

MemberJanuary 20, 2021 at 1:58 am in reply to: What is causing an allergic reaction in this mask recipe?@justaerin and @Bill_Toge…wow, thanks for that information! I bought the oil from Amazon and it says it’s 100% pure and organic…there is even multiple responses from the seller to consumer questions regarding its origin and authenticity and stating that it is “pure essential oil extracted from strawberry seeds and pulp without any additives” (see screenshot attached). This kind of thing is so maddening! It is also very irresponsible for this company to blatantly put out misinformation that could potentially harm people. I should have done better research for sure. Anyway, thanks for all the information!!

MemberJanuary 19, 2021 at 9:02 pm in reply to: What is causing an allergic reaction in this mask recipe?Oh! So my next question is how can I really simplify this mask? If you have an idea on what percentage I should use of each ingredient, that would be super helpful too! I would really like to jump on the “rose themed” and “masks” bandwagon and come up with a nice product
Thanks!!

MemberJanuary 19, 2021 at 6:35 pm in reply to: Please critique my hair conditioning mask formula 🙂Thank you all so much for the feedback! This formula is one I have been working on for a few weeks now and actuallyit did start out pretty simple
But I am guilty of purchasing a bunch of “fluff” ingredients when I first started out a year ago. I’ve learned so much since then but obviously I have a long way to go still! It’s really nice to have this community of chemists and the like to help me and answer my questions!! Thank you! I’ll try simplifying this formula again
