    One of the fun parts about my work is that I get asked to be on tv shows.  It’s a little intimidating and hopefully I don’t say anything stupid, but overall it’s an enjoyable experience.

    The intro is a little over the top and makes me laugh.  We recorded it in December at the last SCC meeting in New York.

    Incidentally, if you were curious about what it’s like to be on that show, I did a little behind the scenes write-up on the blog.

    Nice job Perry!

    Yes, Dr. Oz could use a science advisor! His testimony when he got hauled before Congress was enlightening … Just another huckster on television.

    I think possibly the reason the vast majority of scientists are not speaking out about the B.S. on-line is that as a group, scientists are introverted. They are interested in finding answers to things, not spewing lies to people with the goal of becoming rich.

    Well, that’s MY opinion anyhow.
    Perry did a swell  job. How did he manage to NOT kick Oz in the ‘nads for the crap he (Oz) often spews on his show??? We all want to know! ;)

    The first time I went on his show I wanted to hate him but he is actually a nice guy.  It’s just unfortunate that so much of the stuff on the show is complete nonsense.

    @Margreat:

    It’s not because scientists are introverted … Debates amongst scientists can get quite raucous! It’s that TV is looking for personalities that can excite their audiences to draw advertising dollars. And, this is most often accomplished by fantastical claims with no real scientific basis or pseudoscience … hence, Dr. Oz and his weight loss and skin care “wonder” products, Dr. Phil, Paula Beroun The Cosmetic Cop.  The problem is more that people want to drink that Cool-Aid.
    Curious, Perry did you debate the other female guest one-on-one in the segment, or we’re you kept separate?

    @MarkBroussard - Our segment wasn’t a debate so we didn’t actually have any interaction.  She actually covered material that I told the Oz show about (e.g. the beetle shells used for coloring & finding less expensive versions of expensive cosmetics).  I guess they wanted a little more diversity in the segment.

    You’re right that it is difficult for scientists to go on a show like that because they want to keep everything simple for their audience and science isn’t always simple.  They also want definitive advice and science is also never 100% definitive about anything.  I feel confident enough in busting some cosmetic marketing myths but I try to avoid telling people that any particular product or technology is something they must use.
