Humanity always wants to learn things the hard way lol.
PEG 400 + propylene glycol + ethanol should dissolve SA very easy.

I have the 8th edition, but I can not share it here since it is copyrighted material.
If someone wants it, let me know.

Let’s say that I’m using a broad spectrum preservative at 1%, I would just multiply that by 20 and use 20% in the 2,000 g batch?

    @scelce
Are our previous explanations helpful for you? Can we help you any further with the calculation of weight/percentages?

    Indeed!

@scelce  post your formula here and we will calculate it for you in grams for a 2000 g (2kg) batch. IMO this is a mandatory request, before you harm yourself/

I’m new to cosmetic formulating and I was wondering if I have a formula at 100g and wanted to scale up to 2,000g, do I just multiply the ingredients by 2,000?

    This is very scary

    Anchor blade is kinda foolproof.

Thinking to buy an anchor blade. Do you use it for the hole process or just for the cool down phase? I’m kind of lazy to change blades during a test.

What if you magnetize water first and than vortex?
    Going to brand mag-vor myself!

BASF han an other similar blend called Lanette N or Colliphor CSA  (Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate) and Lanette SX which is Lanette N + Lanette W.

Not a chemist but I’m trying my best to research and not waste too much.

Than why are you even trying? These things can be dangerous.

I have never taken a chemistry class before but I think I have a very basic understanding of some parts of it.

I don’t understand how are you able to evaluate yourself?

Just buy a product from the market and move on. Don’t waste your time in formulation. It is not something you can learn within a few days.

@ngarayeva001, I don’t know why when I was reading sodium carbomer, I was always thinking that you were using sodium polyacrylate. My bad. You should try sodium polyacrylate as well.
I’d still go for mineral oil, it is cheaper, it has a nice skin feel and it is as well an emollient.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22994201

    @ngarayeva001, glad it helped.
I was wondering why did you chose squalene. Why not mineral oil?
Have you tried using only sodium carbomer at 0.5%?  I’m asking because you have 20 ingredients in you formulation which will slow down the production of this product.

@Gunther, the point is actually to figure out this combination.  HLB is balanced, product emulsified well. There are sorbitan oleate, 4% of glyceryl oleate and polysorbate 20 (to balance HLB). The reason for such a combination is that I don’t need fatty alcohols and silicones for it, and (if exclude butters and petrolatum) it can be made using cold process.

You can use PEG-50 shea butter instead of shea butter, which is water soluble and mineral oil instead of petrolatum. This way you can turn your formulation process to cold process.
Regarding your issue with gelling, have you tried to increase the sodoim carbomer percentage? I’d suggest to try 0.5%, 0.7% and 1% and see if the problem persists.

@em88 what are the incompatibilities with HEC ?

On page 14 you will find a list of substances that are not compatible with HEC.
    https://www.lotioncrafter.com/reference/tech_data_natrosol_hec.pdf
I usually try to avoid HEC when formulating shampoos.

Carbopol 0.04%? Isn’t that way too low?
You can increase the quantity of carbopol, GMS or cetyl alcohol to increase the viscosity

38C is not a low temperature at all.
Considering what you have in the formulation, guessing the melting points for each and with such a low oil phase, it is normal that your formulation will be thin at 38C
    croda 1% ~ 50C
    cetyl alcohol 1% ~50C
    GMS 1% ~ 55C
    stearic acid 2% ~ 60C
    beeswax 0.4% ~ 60C

Mention in the packaging “to be stored under 25C” and you are good to go.

The celluosics work pretty well.  HPMC and HEC.  And Carbomer EDT 2020 is helpful too.

Got a sample of this a few days ago. Hope it is not very expensive.

@em88 that is the million dollar question. we who are stuck in the boondoe’s have to be very creative in sourcing raws at affordable prices and everything for non sulfates are expensive and big MOQ’s. i sometimes wish @Perry would do a good webinar on just this topic

I guess everyone has this issue, especially with big companies of raw materials (excipients). They have big MOQs and high prices.

I suspect it’s just easier to pronounce parabens, sulfates, or silicones than isothiazolinones.

If all do the same trick, and there is no performance issue nor stability issue, I’d go for the cheapest and easiest alternative for the manufacturing process.

You can add more ethanol and make sure ethanol is not evaporating.
I’d suggest to weight your ingredients and not use volume.

I have made W/O creams with 80% water! It’s just very important to add the water phase to the oil phase and not vice versa.

Seppic products are great, but are expensive.
