  • Surface Tension & Irritation?

    Hello all,

I’m currently doing some work on a bubble pressure tensiometer, and was wondering if anyone else here has experience with this method of determining surface tension.  Specifically, I’m looking for tips on maintenance, but I’m also interested in seeing if anyone has experienced (or has resources) about the effect surface tension may have on skin.  It makes intuitive sense that the lower the surface tension, the more the surfactant is able to penetrate and therefore (possibly?) irritate the skin.  Does anyone have any idea if this is, in fact, true?  I would like to be able to “test” for skin irritation without actually testing for skin irritation on every formula I make.
    And a couple instrument-specific questions:
    • How often should the hydrophobically-coated capillary be silanized to renew hydrophobicity?
    • How often should the capillary be tested with a standard, such as water or IPA?
    • When should a coated capillary be used over an uncoated capillary, and vice versa?
If anyone can help me out with any of these, I’d really appreciate it!
