    Hi everyone,

I’m a skincare chemist with some knowledge of color cosmetics but recently a client has asked me for “natural mascara”. I’m reluctant to formulate or make this for obvious reasons but she’s has a customer that’s willing to buy 10,000 units off the bat. I told her about the risks involved but I’m looking to find out see if anyone has a recommendations for manufacturers or in general, your thoughts on how to proceed.
    Much appreciated!

First, nail down a definition of “natural” with your client. This is critically important - there are some definitions of “natural” that would make it impossible to formulate a mascara.

Next, identify components. Mascara performance is highly dependent on the components used, more so than any other cosmetic product. It is much faster to adjust a formula to a specific set of components than it is to identify the best-performing components for a finished formula.
Lastly, start calling/researching contract manufacturers. Mascara is a bear to make, and 10,000 units is actually a very small run - you won’t find many manufacturers willing to do this, so your choice should be easy.

Thanks Bob! Any referrals for those manufacturers? Google turns out nothing.

This might be an alternative option worth considering:

*(I know nothing about this company)

A quick update for anyone that might be interested. We didn’t have much luck finding a reliable manufacturer for an all natural mascara. I found a few labeling companies but these are not manufacturers/fillers. Interestingly, some even did less than 100 units with custom labels.

Fortunately, the client agreed to go with non-US manufacturers which sadly makes this selection easier.
