    Hi,

    I am a cosmetic formulator. My comapny produces edible botanical oils such as milk thistle, black seed oil , … . I want to use these oils in cosmetic products. I want to know what is the accepted range of the acid and peroxide values of botanical oils used in the cosmetics. Actually, the acid and peroxide values of the oil that we want to use in our cosmetic products are so high that we cannot use in the food industry. I would be glad if you advised me.

    acid values? as in pH? What kind of cosmetics?

    Acid value, peroxide and anisidine are used as markers of rancidity in oils. The Peroxide and Anisidine is often used in a calculation called TOTOX (2PV+AV) and a TOTOX value above 26 is considered rancid.

    However, this is really useful in polyunsaturated oils such as fish oil, flax oils and generally oils used for nutrition rather than cosmetic use.

    I guess the manufacturer is just proving their oils are not oxidised in bulk, but I would think it is of little use in cosmetic applications

      Thank you so much for your reply. Actually, our company wants to use some botanical oils such as milk thistle and black seed oil whose acid values are high due to the bad store conditioning of the seeds (after buying them for cold press proceture and use for edible oil, it is realized), in cosmetic products like creams. I just want to know the range of acid or peroxide values that is accpted to use in the cosmetucs. I know in the food industry these factors are determined, but in the cosmetic I am asking
