MemberSeptember 23, 2014 at 12:15 am in reply to: Thickening an acidic water based cleanser where Xanthan Gum has failedJust Lotioncrafter’s Xanthan gum, clear type. Ultrapuregel aka Sclerotic gum worked adequately though. the formula doesn’t lather much, but it works really good.

MemberSeptember 6, 2014 at 3:39 pm in reply to: How to preserve green color of green tea used in cleanser formula?I made the following samples, only citric acid changed pH, reducing it from 4 to 3.6. From left to right:
#1 Citric Acid 1%
#2 Disodium EDTA 0.5%
#3 Sodium Metabisulfite 0.5% (Percentage taken from CC discussion)
#4 Glucono Delta Lactone (GDL) 1%
#5 All of the above
#6 ControlOnly Sodium Metabisulfite is making a difference. As you can tell, I also have a consistency problem, the liquid is not homogenous, number #3:Things to try:1. Remove green tea powder from formula
2. Change the thickening agent (suggestions?)
3. Setup two hours of slow stirring to better blend the formula (Xanthan Gum, clear, takes a while to clarify).Other ideas?

MemberSeptember 6, 2014 at 3:06 pm in reply to: Liquid mud mask, slight separation issue, how to fix?I did my own search, I always do. But how did you find the personalformulator link? They did not show up when I initially searched for it on google using keywords: “Magnesium Aluminum Silicate” order OR cosmetics OR bulk OR buy.
I reformulated adding 0.2% xanthan gum (low percentage because I want to avoid any gumminess, not a huge fan of gums in general), after 24 hours at 42C I saw the same separation issue.

Here’s the sorted data, can share spreadsheet if needed. -
I use Dimethicone at times. Does anyone know any better non-dirty alternatives for use in o/w emulsions?

So I’m thinking I’ll go for this, but need to know what kind of media is suitable(if anyone else knows please chime in)

MemberJune 21, 2014 at 5:43 pm in reply to: Humectants compatible and incompatible with Carbomer? So the lotion thickened to a good thickness overnight, not at all runny. Will add 2% cetyl alcohol to the next test batch. Will do acc. stability on both and see how they hold up.

MemberMay 22, 2014 at 9:13 pm in reply to: Basic oil based concealer formula - Need help to make it conceal.. Formula within. Thanks a lot Robert, I had a feeling I was doingitwrong, but hard to find info on formulating these things.
My staff mixer does 15000 rpm, when used in a tightly fitting beaker I feel it will function like the Amazon jar blender you linked to.Regarding milling, how do you use the Lortone as a ball mill - what extras do you need? (They range from $40 used to $100 new). How long do you generally mill Zno for?And how about a ball mill attached to a drill like this one:$(KGrHqZ,!k4E6E5O3j1qBOiCw)hWdg~~60_12.JPG” style=”font-size: 10pt;”>
Do you know anything about what particle sizes work well together? I have two different ones of Zinc, around 0.5 and 0.1 um averages. Thanks milla. Will try to sample them.

MemberMay 22, 2014 at 11:06 am in reply to: Basic oil based concealer formula - Need help to make it conceal.. Formula within. So I’ve used boron nitride as a titanium dioxide replacement in this particular “natural friendly” formula, any comment on the percentages and particle sizes?
It is a bit too thin, so I’ll increase the amount of beeswax. I’d also like to improve coverage + opacity. So
@millachemist any particular Nylon-12 source or BPD? If you have model names I can probably get samplesBlue pigment is interesting, never thought of that, but first improving coverage is more important.

In any case, interesting formula and arguable THE best reviewed skin treatment product on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Medline-Remedy-Olivamine-Repair-Cream/dp/B004GC2LLE
The alphabetical order makes it harder to know what’s doing something though. What would a stripped down version look like? Emulsifier + thickener + preservative + the followingAscorbic Acid
Ascorbyl Palmitate
Cholecalciferol - Vitamin D3
Citric Acid
Citrus Grandis Peel Oil
Glycerin
Glycine
Hydroxytyrosol - Olive derived antioxidant?
L Proline - Seems to be part of a amino acid ++ blend.
L Taurine
Methylsulfonylmethane
N Acetyl L Cysteine
NiacinamidePropylene GlycolPyridoxine HClRetinyl PalmitateTocopherol
Vanillin
WaterSo it uses Olivamine, a prop. blend that the pinnacle olivamine supplement can tell us a little about: -
So hyralonic acid is just hype? I guess it can still be used for gelling at low pH where you don’t want to use xanthan gum and carbomer won’t work well..
-
Thanks for reminding me about Niacinamide hydrolysis, had forgotten about that, the rate of hydrolysis at pH 4 is still low but better safe than sorry don’t want to trigger any flushing. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jps.2600510710/abstract
Will try HMPC.What humectants are considered good for cleansers? I read that glycerin stays on whereas sodium lactate/pca gets washed off. How about hyrwhatsitsname acid?Anything you guys feel is missing from this formula? I see that most cleanser use propylene glycol, presumable as a humectant and penetration enhancer?
