  • Thickening an acidic water based cleanser where Xanthan Gum has failed

As you can tell there is separation and cloudiness in the formula, it still works and is thickened, but doesn’t look very good in the bottle.
The formula is pH 4, with the following ingredients:
Distilled Water, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea), Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Decyl Polyglucoside, Willow Bark Extract, Lactic Acid, Sodium Lactate, Vegetable Glycerin, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol (and) Caprylyl Glycol (and) Sorbic Acid, Allantoin, Xanthan Gum.

Seems like Carbopol® Aqua CC Polymer or perhaps Schlerotic gum could work better, HEC and Crothix does not work well in this formula. Thoughts?

I persist in being a big fan of Laponite

Just received a sample of Laponite XLG! What ballpark % would you recommend for a cleanser?

Which grade of xanthan have you used, there are few special ones for very acidic pH like Kelzan range . Choose the appropriate one for yours, guess it might work.
Though I am sure Bobz suggestion might work great as well for your specific need.

Just Lotioncrafter’s Xanthan gum, clear type. Ultrapuregel aka Sclerotic gum worked adequately though. the formula doesn’t lather much, but it works really good.

I will try to reformulate it using 1% Laponite XLG, the version they recommended for my application. Will be interesting to see how/if it lathers.

Glucamate VLT works great for me, with a fabulous hand-feel, but it can be a bit pricey.
