What % of each do you recommend for a mild shampoo? -
0.5-2.0%? That’s quite a range.
-
I think you need to add at least one additional preservative plus 0.25% or so of sodium phytate (chelator), and then come back to us.

MemberMay 6, 2022 at 1:47 am in reply to: Niacinamide and Low Ph - is the science settled?Stating the obvious: I’m sure one factor is the % you are using. I think you cannot compare potential downsides of lower pH when niacinamide is at 1% vs at 5%. Also, I’m sure the other ingredients one uses play a role in whether it will remain stable. Finally, I thought the indication was pH of 5 or greater, and you already seem to be at or near 5. I’ve never heard of a supplier saying the pH had to be higher than that — only that the “ideal” pH was 6 or 7.
@Perry
Some suppliers indicate that a pH of 5 is required in order to avoid hydrolysis. -

Also, I thought this device was known for introducing a bit more air than is ideal, but I am not sure.

I asked about ergothioneine the other day but didn’t get any replies
-
Just adding that you will more than likely have to use a high-shear mixture of sorts.

Any suggestions for where one can purchase small quantities of said ergothioneine? Thank you. -
Make sure you are noting whether it is thyme oil or thymol when you read up on this. It is apparently extremely potent, as one company is marketing a disinfectant with 0.051% thymol.

MemberMarch 19, 2022 at 3:01 am in reply to: Propylene glycol irritation. I thought this was a rather benign ingredient?I know with 100pct certainty that I cannot tolerate PG. That said, I am using an Rx topical with — I think? — 30pct propanediol in it, and I am having some itching/irritation. Propanediol is known to have a better irritancy profile, but given the two are basically identical compounds, I struggle to see how it could be that much better.

MemberMarch 19, 2022 at 2:56 am in reply to: Organic Grape Alcohol 190 proof as a Preservative?@floragood, you can try getting more advice from Olionatura, but I can tell you from experience, ethanol is difficult to work with in emulsions, especially when you go above 5% total concentration or so. I have had some luck in cold process adding it at the beginning, but the recommendation — if using hot process — is to always add it during cool down. You might be better off trying to use a smaller concentration of alcohol plus other natural agents as preservatives and then seeing if that works. Obviously, you would have to do some testing, no matter which path you choose, to make sure the preservation is effective.

GTE is mentioned twice, so I would double check your list. What form of vitamin C?

MemberMarch 19, 2022 at 2:33 am in reply to: How to formulate alcohol and PG free natural “rogaine”Allegedly, it is extremely difficult to solubolize minoxidil without either in your base, and there is very little evidence online about the subject about which bases will work (other than these two). My only other suggestion is to use propanediol, but that is very similar to PG — not sure if you are comfortable using it? do not know if propanediol with water (no ethanol) will work. I only know that a mix of propanediol and ethanol as a base does because I had a compound chemist make a preparation for me.

MemberDecember 28, 2021 at 6:18 pm in reply to: Dermofeel PA-3: Do any US-based “repackers” carry this ingredient?Well, now that you mention it, I did have one fundamental question: how is it that the recommended dosing (roughly, 0.1%-0.5%) appears to be the same for both sodium phytate (in powder form) as it is for Dermofeel PA-3, which is 50% sodium phytate by weight?
@Graillotion: Good point. I actually could make by own, but I think I would do 25% water/25% ethanol to hopefully kill some of the bugs Lotioncrafter might be sending my way. As @Abdullah references, I am not really sure why they are bothering to incorporate 1% ethanol.

I think I had actually been thinking of this one:
https://www.olionatura.de/rohstofftabellen/konservierertabelle.phpbut there are a few ones “missing,” such as phenethyl alcohol. Either way, still a great, concise resource for those who are natural-focused.

Thank you. I believe Escali is actually an American company with production in the “Far East,” as they say.
Kern (German company) is also supposed to be good, but with shipping and handling (to the US) it becomes as much as the Ohaus.
-
For those of us wanting a newbie 0.01g-precision scale, it seems like my main options — being in the US — are either Ohaus ($260 or so) or . . . what else comes to mind?
(My current one was $15 on Amazon, and that has lasted me about 9 months before becoming inaccurate.)
Thank you.
