Also, I went to browse the site. When I tried to search for a product, an error box appeared asking me to turn on pop-ups for the site.

Can I throw in my answer to your question, Perry?
Is there a means of measuring how much oil a given amount of emulsifier (say 1g) can emulsify?
Also, when I think strength, I think tenacity of the emulsion. Is there any way to predict that if we’re talking about emulsion duration/time until failure?

@ngarayeva001 Thats nice - it doesnt add any viscosity. Im always interested in emsulfiers that are viscosity-neutral.
edit: AND its synthetic. Im with you, give me all the synthetics, the parabens and pour some mineral oil on top.

What do you mean by harsh? If you used alcohol to press, it would evaporate in a day or two.

This is probably the most unfortunate part of the industry, coming from medicine.

You need the Cosmetic Chemists Corner Crew! (Seriously, you need a team for this, not just a chemist(s).)

But since you write in riddles I’m aouta here, sorry pal.

I’m sorry I’m not a chemist, I’m just trying to help out the actual chemist who don’t have access to this so I’m trying my best haha. But thank you for the help and suggestions! I know, I suck at this that’s why I had to hire a chemist! :(

Your chemist doesn’t have the internet? (You’re gonna need to post everything you can like Pharma, ngarayeva001 and Sibech said.)

Seconding looking at the preservative system. That, and cleaning your jars if this is a typical problem and your preservatives test okay.

Is your lab air conditioned and the factory isn’t? (Humidity)
It’s usually very difficult for us to answer questions with such little information.

@chemicalmatt Baffles reduce air entrapment? (If you have the time, could you explain how that works?)
Edit: entrainment* It happens when the surface of the vortex meets the impeller blades. Baffles cause a change in flow patterns resulting in more top to bottom mixing and less air entrainment.

@tinas, do you have a formulation you could share with us? Without that, we’re gonna continue to help only to find our suggestions are unhelpful/inapplicable.

It it might seem backwards but as far as I know (which isn’t much), a regular lotion + SPF is actually more difficult than what we think of as standard sunscreen.

Have you tried simply increasing the amount of wax? How is the texture currently?

Also, what’s natural to your brand? We generally need a lot of information before we can be helpful because we need to understand everything about the product via text before we can make helpful recommendations.

@Microformulation re: limited UVA protection mentioned in the article. That’s really interesting. In all the reading I’ve done about sunscreen, this has never been presented as a potential problem. I never really thought about it until now.

That glycerin is going to require an emulsifier. Or drop that and your otherwise-anhydrous formula should be fine.

I’m sorry, not to hijack your thread… can anyone explain/elaborate on why cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 dimethicone is ubiquitous in complexion products?

Hopefully no one is creating products that utilize colored mica or unknown origin.

No, once you add something “not safe” it’s… not safe. ;)

Have you used this formula? Similar to gld010, I’m skeptical of its performance. Seems incredibly dry. For formula critique we need the actual formula though.

Cinnamon on bark is not enough of a preservative. In my opinion, things like these are not real preservatives. Especially if you plan to manufacture this, you’ll quickly learn through stability testing.

    Hi Theoracle,

Typically people work out a preliminary formula before asking a question like this. Simple questions are fine and “tweak my formula” questions are fine because they both have a tangible goal, if that makes sense. With a question like this, there are too many variables and it’s too subjective. We’d have to guess a lot before providing any kind of answer.

You may want to look at some formulas as a starting point and try some of those so you can get most of the preferential decisions out of the way. It’s like asking “which surfactants should I use to make a facial cleanser?” If we gave you an answer, you probably wouldn’t like the result.

You say the pigment (27) is color changing - what color is it starting as, and what color is it supposed to become upon application?

What INCI’s are you seeing? It may seem like a silly question, but there are many sucrose-based emulsifiers out there. The Sisterna line comes to mind.

Yeah, I see various emulsifiers sometimes but at the moment I mean exclusively “sucrose”.

This is a good point. And I imagine a lot of stickiness, even at low levels.
