Probably Oil in Water but it depends on how much oil and water is in your system and how you make it.

    1. Add up all the grams. This is your total
    2. Divide each ingredient amount by the total.
    3. Multiply each number by 100 to get %

    So water = 424.44/683.17 x 100 = 62.13%

Yeah the search function isn’t good on this software. I actually use Google to search the forum. For example go to Google & search “chemistscorner.com/cosmeticsciencetalk preservative”

    much better searching function

@ketchito - I’ve not seen evidence of this (or that it matters) in practice & I specifically worked on a research project to explore this.

@Paprik - I guess I’m a bit too predictable. I remember learning that when I was on the VO5 shampoo line & in my first year of formulating. We have an “extra body” formula and a “for color treated hair” formula and the difference was color, fragrance and a couple extracts.

@GeorgeBenson -  In truth, exposure to water is responsible for the vast majority of hair color loss. So, the shampoo you use just doesn’t really affect it that much.

As for color boosting, no those can actually have an impact. Well, that is if they include basic or acidic dyes at a high enough level. For example, those purple shampoos really will help remove the yellow brassiness out of hair. But often, these are also just marketing stories.

    Marketing makes it color safe.

I’ll add that it could also be the result of condensation dripping back down on the surface but you didn’t explain the situation enough so that might not be relevant.

I would guess the “Why not you test/try it out” responses are most often a result of people not having enough information or really knowing the answer.

Many fundamental questions in cosmetic formulating are not widely known. The vast majority of relevant research, if it has been done at all, has been done on company time & is a corporate secret. Unless a chemist has worked on a specific question themselves, it’s likely they can only guess at the answer.

@PhilGeis - Hopefully, it’s not because the big “natural brand” they bought is having a negative influence on the rest of their brands.

Perhaps it was that you “buried the lead”. It wasn’t clear what the question was.

But I’m assuming this is it… “how do you, scientists and philosophers in this site, normally answer or wallop believers when they say ‘It works’ without being dragged down to their level and get beaten by their experience?”

My response is typically the question “what evidence has convinced you that it worked?”  Maybe they are seeing something you didn’t see.

As you can see from the response to that previous thread I’m also not afraid to admit when my philosophical outlook on life does not mesh well enough with another person to continue the discussion.

If something “works” for a person, then we should just assume that it does work for them. However, we shouldn’t assume their explanation for why it works has any validity. Much of the performance of a product / ingredient is the result of psychological effects rather than physical/chemical effects. When someone spends $80 on 1 ounce of lotion, they are going to believe that it works miracles no matter what it actually does.

Parabens aren’t normally used in a relaxer either. They’re reaching.

@Microformulation - interesting work. And suggests there won’t be any chemical reaction between the acid and glyceryl stearate.

But the authors go in with the assumption that ferulic acid does something in a topical treatment. I don’t think that has been proven.

The doctors are right and people should listen to their advice.
Prescription tretinoin is a drug that has the potential to cause skin irritation. See this. https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/tretinoin-topical-route/precautions/drg-20066521?p=1

Stating the less-than-obvious, how could anyone know whether it inhibited the function of ferulic acid or not? There is little evidence that ferulic acid does anything anyway!

I can confidently declare using Glyceryl Stearate with Ferulic Acid will make exactly zero noticeable difference in performance.

They showed a correlation but no theory of causation.

This is like saying ice cream sales cause shark attacks because they are correlated.  see https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations

October 31, 2022 at 12:22 pm in reply to: Which of these two shampoos is milder for skin protein?

Gentleness is a subjective term. It’s not something you can figure out just by looking at a formula. Unless there are obvious differences (like a solution of 10% SLS vs deionized water) you have to test it with actual users to notice subtle differences.

I’m also not sure what you mean by “milder for skin protein”. What chemical or physical reaction happens that makes something less mild?

@PhilGeis - if one believes the marketing materials of raw material suppliers & some finished goods makers, the purpose of enhanced penetration is to get drug benefits from cosmetics.

The cheap alternative should work. As long as you can boil water in it and it is pyrex, that will be fine.
