@Pharma thanks for the link. I’m not going to pretend that I learned anything or even understood what I was reading LOL

@Pharma Its a basic recipe. Berry extract (simmering berries and straining) Honey to sweeten the juice and animal sourced gelatin.
A basic recipe I saw was just using the juice, water with gelatin and mix and set in molds.
do you know how much citric acid I would use? is the above a good ratio? -
@chemicalmatt Thank you thats exactly what i wanted to know. @Pharma Yes I may freeze and see how it unthaws before use. I hear sometimes freezing can destroy some of the good nature of products.
@EVchem Just the inner gooey stuff.

MemberMarch 12, 2020 at 12:19 am in reply to: Organic Formulating General Question?@Perry Well I went ahead and threw the $50 in the trash to say the least. Ive lost much more doing business. Im officially Peace Love Naturals haha. Thanks for the chat. I should have considered this better. Thankfully though I was able to get peacelovenaturals.com verse the organics I could only get the .org .net .us. But I cant seem to change my username on this forum.

MemberMarch 11, 2020 at 9:57 pm in reply to: Organic Formulating General Question?@Perry HaHa I will def take that into account about the blog post. I didn’t mean the post all together but her description of the organic standard for each label.
Now I know your not a lawyer but you dont think complying with COSMOS guidelines would help get me out of any issues with labeling “Made With Organic Ingredients” Obviously Im not claiming my product is 100% Organic nor do I plan to use the USDA logo. I was hesitant to use “Organics” after watching one of your lectures, but when I decided to follow COSMOS standard I thought that would help to justify the “Organics” in the name. All oils, butters, Essential Oils, and even extracts, when I can, are labeled Organic from the suppliers and many USDA Organic. So most all of the agriculture ingredients I use are organic. I guess my confusion would come into play with the actives, emulsifiers, gums etc….I’ve not really seen the label “organic” with these, rather many come from natural sources.
The document you sent seems very vague as it states I can say “made with organic materials” when its at a 70%. USDA deff is in my opinion not realistic for cosmetic formulation.
If my business got to a stage where I could afford, and it would be worth it to get Cosmos certified, would this protect my business in the states? Of course that’s thinking optimistically. Hey I think I have a good concept and nich so who knows, maybe Target will like me haha

MemberMarch 11, 2020 at 1:11 am in reply to: Organic Formulating General Question?@Pharma So I dont care about the Vegan label, only “organic” “natural” yes natural isnt always better, I get that…idk why I always feel the need to say these kinds of things here…maybe I feel like a bit of a fish out of water as I know many science minded people kinda giggle at us “organic” folks
But I digress LOL
Is COSMOS and Ecocert vegan? My products will have honey, possibly even tallo in a lip balm. Im actually Muslim so Halal must also be a label I concern myself with.
@Perry Do you find USDA to be more strict then cosmos? I plan on being “made with organic materials”

Thank you, yes I was planning to put oil in my gel.

EVchem said:Sodium Benzoate and Potassium sorbate are both used in food, but the pH has to be low (5.5 or lower is the typical recommendation). They have a maximum safe use limit set by CIR, and I would take extra precaution formulating to avoid any potential issues with infants. No customer will be more dangerous than a mom who thinks your product has harmed their child
I def agree I have decided to keep it anhydrous
-
@Perry No I agree, sulfates def cleanse better. My customer base is very used to using sulfates on a need to bases but like a more mild clean for my frequent washes. So I def understand that the best clean may not be produced with non sulfate. I think what I am having difficulty with is which ones to pair together. I understand the ionic, anionic etc. but understanding perfectly what each one would do aside from what I can is under my know how. For example could I use DLS with SC that was mentioned above and Decyl Glucoside Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate mix? Would this make a well performing non sulfate? And well performing in a general sense. Of course I understand everyone’s opinion is subjective on what that means…
-
Thanks so much. I will deff look into that one. Also found out that the COSMOS raw material site might be faulty. I looked up Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate and it didnt show up, but i found on another site it was ECOCERT approved. Would this work well with it?
-
@lmosca thanks so much. I have so many questions its embarrassing and Im hoping I dont become a bother honestly. I unfortunately have a bit of an obsessive behavior and when I get into something I have to learn and know all I can and its super exciting for me haha
-
@Perry Sorry for the prob very basic question, but can we only get ceramides from ceramide solutions? Can we get them from its source? Are ceramides found in oils or fats etc?

MemberMarch 10, 2020 at 12:05 am in reply to: Breastfeeding Balm and Baby Saftey?@ozgirl yes Ive heard of this but then whats the fun really as theres are great Lanolin brands out there, plus many people are weary about lanolin. I used a balm myself with all my children that was made by my midwife and it was great. Her “saftey” in making it maybe not so good, oils, water, no preservatives….but it was used only for a couple weeks so whatever.
I will def keep that in mind and just make a anhydrous balm, or state a very short shelf life. 30 days max.(still unsure if thats safe though)

@Pharma I did check her page for purchase but holy moly shipping was like 35 euro which is crazy if Im just getting one thing. It may end up being what I have to do though as alchemy only sends samples really and idk if they will approve my sample request. I did request a sample for the supplier here in the states but even after the sample Id be surprised if their sales are the amount Im looking to buy. I also agree, I mean Im kinda a hippie and science is NOT my thing. But now that Im actually trying to formulate properly because I want my business to be successful Im finding Im really enjoying the science and Im sure many of you scientist prob see my name “Peace Love Organics” and laugh, but thats okay, I admit im a bit hippie dippy so im doing the best i can to be true to myself in my products and name and have fun too
@Perry
-
@Perry oh no ok these were my main preservatives i was getting ready to purchase. I have optiphen plus but its not COSMOS approved so I may just use it with my experiments and personal use. What “natural” preservative would be best for natural formulating emulsions?
-
@Pharma so then are these ok to just preserve non emulsions. But if I put an oil in my gel, it would then be an emulsion yes?
-
@Perry Ok great. I’m just having a killer time finding cosmos approved ones for whatever reason that I can access. They’re out there but i cant seem to find them on the sites for small formulators. I see that Ceramide 3 is permitted but i found : Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract & Ceramide NP (ceramide 3) Found a Lacto Cermamide but again I cant find a COSMOS approval for it. COSMOS has EcoCeramide LCS, but I cant find this to buy anywhere…And simple Ceramide 3 is $275 for 10g! yikes.
-
@Perry I would love to know which 2-3 you would recommend (non sulfate) Id also like to stay away from Coco Betaine as its has a high irritation rating. I have nothing against sulfate shampoos but honestly there are so many great ones out there, mine would prob be no better. I also only use one every once in a while so Id like to formulate one that Id use more often and my customers. I swear picking out the surfactants have been the only reason I haven’t formulated yet. I am also trying to abide by COSMOS standard, its just a good idea with the name and philosophy of the brand so things like sodium lauroyl sarcosinate are not permitted from what I’ve looked up.
