Are you talking about hair mascara? Because if yes then the same as in regular mascara

I like coco caprylate and I recently bought butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, which is quite nice polar medium to light. Butylene glycol in that list but the ester isn’t (if it works that way).

Germaben II and Liquid Germall Plus are also good options.

I wonder how serious is it about PEGs. I saw so many commercial products with PEGs preserved with parabens.. maybe it’s only relevant for very high amounts of PEGs?

I have to dissapoint you just a little bit. Vitamin C doesn’t do much for skin lightening unfortunately. But you can only figure this out yourself. By the way, I will stain your pillow case, so be aware of that if you apply it at night.

I understand that some chemists might throug rotten tomatoes at me for saying it, but your formula is self preserving though… Look you have 15% of glycols (which means water activity is very low), you have a chelator, it’s low pH because I can see 17% of LAA plus citric acid.. is it around 2? I don’t see any bug food either.. You should be fine for 3 months with Germaben II or without.

To be honest it’s such a nice formula for someone with a name @DIY_Newbie :)
Every time when I hear “DIY” I think of “goat milk, PEGs are toxic, organic raw honey, parabens cause cancer” kinda crowd. Well done :)

What is your total active surfactant matter?

You need an amphoteric surfactant in this formula. Also you need more Cocoyl glutamate and less decyl glucoside. Are these% reflecting active matter ?

@Pharma, have you ever checked skincare on Etsy? I was shocked from the number of goat milk lotions. Every second product has goat milk in it.

Have you tried to heat both water and PG before mixing? It helps sometimes.

You need to heat things like cocamide DEA or Glyceryl Oleate to melt them. I don’t see a reason to heat liquid surfactants.

  • Esters and silicones are so much better anyway. I don’t understand why people over complicate their life.

re:”I always thought that men likes menthol containing shampoo because it gives cool sensation”.
I actually agree with you but my observation is that it really messes up with the viscosity. The best way to solve your problem is to make a very simple shampoo (SLES/CAPB/Water/Preservative), and start adding your claim ingredients one by one to see what effect they have on the product. My point is, SLES/CAPB is the most used combination and it doesn’t need any gums and polymers to reach pretty high viscosity. Some of your claim ingredients affects it. You need to igure out who is the “criminal”. I suspect PEG-40 HCO and menthol. It’s unlikely PG or sal acid.

Well, what is your benchmark? There are plenty of “natural” low HLB emulsifiers so it all depends on what else is in your formula.

Thank you @EVchem. I use germall plus and was curious about DMDM as it sounds as a great preservative that is compatible with all ingredients but those cancer warnings make even such a ‘synthetics lover’ as myself to look into it.

  • I have compared behentrimonium methosulfate and chloride in identical formulas and concluded that chloride is more conditioning. I need to give cetrimonium another try I guess.

You don’t need HCO to solubilise salicylic acid. You can use PG which you already including.
I don’t recommend using food grade gums in personal care products. They are not made to be aesthetically pleasing. For example the difference between food and cosmetic grade xanthan is enormous.
Make sure that that article refers to a reliable source. It doesn’t sound like it is.

Start from a very simple SLES/CAPB water, preservative, NaCl shampoo. Once it works as you want and you are comfortable with formulating it, start adding your claim ingredients. I don’t think you need guar or any other gums in SLES CAPB shampoo. You probably can’t achieve desired viscosity because of menthol and PEG40 HCO. Start simple.

    - Is it SLES 16% as supplied or 16% of active matter? Same question about CAPB.
    - What is PEG-40? Is it PEG-40 HCO (in that case what is the purpose of it), is it PEG-40 Stearate (what is the purpose?) or some other PEG-40?
    - What is the purpose of salicylic acid?
    - Is your guar gum cationic?
    - What is the purpose of glycerin and propylene glycol in your formula?
    - Why do you want to add lauric acid to your shampoo?

  • There is no precise answer for this, as it depends on too many factors. You have to run experiments to see.

  • I hope they just listed ingredients in the wrong order. Citrus oils are too high in the list.

  • ammonium acryloydimethyltaurate.vp copolymer Is a polymeric emulsifier Aristoflex AVC and you can find it on lotioncrafter. It can emulsify only 5% of oils on its own, but it changes texture of the product significantly. It’s often used as a stabiliser and to improve  aesthetics of the product. It’s that one ingredient that turns a generic lotion into a luxury product.

  • About 20% of your oil phase including fatty alcohols within 3-7%. But this is a matter of experimentation.

@Perry, I thought you should see this video. “Natural” brought to the extreme,  guy makes KOH out of wood ashes (from grille) and then makes soap. As natural as possible (if ignore that burning is also a chemical reaction).

Then you have to go back to stone age and just make castile soap. It will be a bad shampoo, a bad body wash, a bad dish washing liquid but it is as natural as you can get. It also will be a bad floor washing liquid. I was given a bottle of castile soap and didn’t find a better use for it.

  • List your oil phase please.
