They make great shampoos too. Argan oil is their most known I believe. This is what I used to buy before I started dabbling in surfactants. All of them are made of Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate and CAPB. Some include SCI (looking at position at LOI I would guess at low%). I am lucky as olefin sulfonate is dirt cheap in the UK, so it’s one of my favorite anionic surfactants.

And obviously anything that can be classified as food: milk, honey, fruit and vegetable purées (hello Lush) and similar claim ingredients that don’t do anything beyond being fairy dust.

MemberDecember 17, 2020 at 8:33 pm in reply to: Common Mistakes Made When Beginning To FormulateI assume the idea of keratin came from keratin hair treatment but it’s not keratin that is responsible for the effect. It’s either formaldehyde or alkali, but you can’t sell a treatment ‘that exposes hair to extreme ph and it allows it to be straightened’, ‘keratin treatment’ sounds better.

Is there a reason why it should be w/o? Those emulsions work against rules of thermodynamics (well all emulsions are but w/o more than others) and hard to make stable even without loads of additives.
-
Also, how exactly do you process it? W/o are very sensitive to process
-
Oh Abil EM 90… as chemicalmatt said, you need salt. You also need a second emulsifier and countless trials and errors. It’s not an easy emulsifier. It also prefers silicones in the oil phase. Replace Propanediol with sodium lactate. It works well in w/o. Not 1.5-2% not 8.
-
@emma1985, I don’t want to be pessimistic but it’s only getting worse from what I observe. And seems like big companies gave up and give people they are ready to pay for the ‘natural’ stuff without silicones and parabens.
-
The main difference between mineral oil and vegetable oils is that mineral oil is non polar and not prone to oxidation. Both o/w and w/o emulsions are more stable when non polar oils are used. So pretty much anything should work. Try Arlacel 165 it is a great emulsifier.

@amitvedakar, the only point I am trying to make is that synthetic doesn’t mean poisonous and natural doesn’t always means safe. I understand that properly treated aloe is safe but the commentator above went down the route of unsubstantiated claims about natural ingredients. It’s problematic to prove a negative statement using scientific methods (such as aloe doesn’t do something) so I can’t share a study that would disprove claims made, but I showed that natural ingredient (aloe in this case) can actually be rather problematic.
-
@amitvedakar this is a great example of a non scientific claim. My grandfather smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day, and lived long and healthy life. Here, I have just proven cigarettes are safe and cause living long life.
-
@Bill_Toge I watched some supplier’s webinar a while ago where they explained the process of removing aloin and were assuring their aloe powder is safe etc. For me ingredients used in cosmetics (in countries with reasonable regulation) are safe until proven otherwise. But I noticed many people throw unsupported claims about ‘toxic chemicals’ and ‘natural and healing’ plants. Aloe is a great example how a plant that is commonly seen as natural and wonderful can in fact be much more dangerous than ‘scary’ silicones, petrolatum etc.

thank you very much for this. Unfortunately missed a large part of it because of work. Looking forward to a replay. -
None of these are proper INCI names. It should be olea europaea and ricinus communis not olive fruit and castor oil.
-
It’s not the only source. You can look it up yourself. Aloe isn’t a magical heal it all ingredient. Having said that, compounds in question are removed from aloe that is used in cosmetic products, but taken into consideration that a lot of people just dump aloe juice into their formulas instead of water (and use ‘natural preservatives’ hello contamination) the point I made is valid: it’s a potential human carcinogen.

MemberDecember 5, 2020 at 3:02 pm in reply to: Combining Preservatives - Germall Plus and EuxylI will use a chance to throw my question too as we are lucky to have two experts here. I often combine germall plus and phenonip. The reason being, I buy ingredients from repackagers, and you can’t trust them on storing ingredients properly (I saw things like coconut oil in a ziplock bag and photosensitive materials in a transparent bottle). Also they decant ingredients million times allowing dust and bugs in. So I just assume all ingredients are compromised from day 1. Is there any reason not to do this. I figured there are no overlapping compounds in these two preservative blends so I won’t go over recommended limit. Thank you in advance @PhilGeis and @chemicalmatt

@mariaagarcia Oh aloe has antiviral properties? I guess the best scientists of the world just wasted a year of time and millions of lives. Covid victims should just chew a piece of aloe?
-
I would use sodium lactate in a toner. It’s much cheaper than sodium pca and very similar (not sticky). But you will need a fragrance as it has a bit of a weird smell.

Do you have a company registered? Do you have a registered brand name? What’s your budget?
