“Do you think that I have to write each and every plant extract I
included in it? Maybe I should, but then everyone can copy it? right?”Yes, you have an obligation to reveal all components in the ingredient deck. It is to allow the consumer to make informed decisions. -
In my opinion only, using the term “Chemist” or a similar term requiring a University degree should be reserved for those who have completed a course of Academic study. While it may sound dismissive to others, using these terms will clearly “imply” to the general public that formal training exists.“Formulator” describes a job function and is less disingenuous.

We have definitely been having an issue with silicones. In the last week, Botanical Blends have gotten backed up and we have had to source aggressively to even get a 4 week lead time on samples.

MemberDecember 27, 2021 at 3:18 pm in reply to: Hairstylist looking for formulator for styling productsFormulation should be fairly straightforward, but you do need to look at your Business Plan before proceeding. (No offense, it is an issue I have dealt with many times).- What is your Sales strategy? Selling even at multiple salons will not likely be able to move the number of retail pieces manufacturers will require.
- What is your budget? No need to elaborate here, but as your develop your Business plan you will need to approximate these costs. As an emerging line, you will likely not see any volume discounts on materials or manufacturing.
A Cosmetic line will succeed to a large extent due to proven Business practices. Working with a Formulator will help to get product, but you must remember that sales/marketing will be where you need to concentrate. A mediocre product with a cohesive sales strategy will in most cases out perform stellar product with so-so marketing.

Listen to people in the know, know what you don’t know and use Citric acid as it is more of an Industry standard. Using HCl is mind boggling and dangerously naive/Wisdom is knowing what you don’t know. -

MemberDecember 17, 2021 at 7:40 pm in reply to: Self-preserving claims of Pine Extvolat/Pineaqua productI think I will pass on trying the product without controlled testing. We work with clients that want rapid R&D and want a product to get into manufacturing asap. As such a reformulation due to an ineffective product is a barrier. We use tried and true preservatives and use them conservatively. This clients won’t endorse a product without documentation or testing results.@Extvolat I think you will see that this group is Science-based and marketing is taken with a grain of salt. To communicate effectively, you may need to present products to a more Technical standard. -

this is a herbal blend and I am trying to confirm the verbiage that will go on the bottle. You may have issues depending upon the distributor. We have disqualified several suppliers of botanicals (not real mainstream suppliers) due to poor documentation. It may sound picky, but some buyers (and all Natural Certification organizations) will require this paperwork.

I see so many citations from “google searches” which wouldn’t meet the standards for academic citation.

Yes, best practices will dictate that you destroy “expired” or “outdated” materials. It is that simple.

We use a Work-For-Hire contract which was prepared by an Attorney and outlines these issues. We include the approved IP (Formula) as part of our fee. We do not manufacture.Having these contracts outlines what they are and are NOT paying for. Also, I speak with many colleagues. You need to vet the clients. We have had these issues with some emerging lines and the contract will properly assign risk. Our weirdest request for a refund was “we never had the funds to get the Formula manufactured. Please send a refund.”

MemberNovember 26, 2021 at 5:23 pm in reply to: Water quality for cold process formulationsWhat improvement do you believe boiling the water will deliver? If you read about sterilization, you must have pressure and heat. Use validated water and use a robust preservative system. You aren’t performing sterile manufacturing. If you ever worked in a clean room or a laminar flow hood, you would see that it is fruitless to attempt sterility. Be sanitary.
