@Doreen81 you are right regarding the smelling. I use 0.8% and combine with essential oils. So the smell becomes not so bad. Therefore I am going to replace it with Dermofeel 1388 .

Thanks everybody. I will also do some experiments to decide which product to use. Currently my preservative is Benzylalcohol, dehydroacetic acid. My concern is that it can be inactivated by nonionic emulsifier.

@MarkBroussard Could you advice any material how to formulate Sodium Anisate , Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate and Sodium Levulinate combination for natural skincare product? Is there appropriate product in the market, which contains this component combination? Thanks.

MemberSeptember 13, 2017 at 10:56 am in reply to: Herbal extracts with alcohol. How to use them in skin care creams?I have lilac tincture. I would like to have lilac extract in under eye treatment. But not sure if I may add tincture directly into the base lotion. One of my friends suggested to evaporate the tincture in vacuum. This is not an easy task. A special evaporator is required. I would like to know if somebody has used tinctures in lotions and how the final product becomes. I made infused oil of lilac, but this is not exactly what I need.

@Belassi How do you dry plastic containers after processing them with Alcohol? Glass container can be dried in oven under 50-60C temperature.

I use Hydrogen peroxide for processing containers after washing them with glass washing liquids. Usually I get 20 cfu/g in the end. To be confident of the required 3% concentration I use 7% Hydrogen peroxide.

MemberJuly 10, 2017 at 7:59 am in reply to: Is an incubator necessary for microbial testing?I am confused. So I guess the incubator temperature control high precision is not critical. See what is written in microbiological agar test kit user manual: 25-30C +/- 2C is confusing statement!

MarkBroussard Thanks a lot. I have bought 4 oz of it and will do some experiments. I use Olivem1000 Montanov68, and still happy with the results. I am working on a under eye treatment formula now, but did not faced the described problem with Olivem1000.

I would suggest to pasteurize. I always keep this way with aqua phase before emulsifying. Even Aloe fruit juice. I heat it till 90C, then cool down to 70-75C and mix to oil phase and homogenize. One more question from my side? What is better to use, hydrosols or decoctions (tinctures with hot boiled water instead of alcohol )?

@MarkBroussard RitaMulse is the INCI NAME: Glyceryl Stearate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol (and) Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate ?

From another point of view, some emulsion forming processes require the aqua part to be heated till 80-85C. It means that in any cases your hydrosol, which is part of water phase gets pasteurized.

Which is allowed value for total plate count bacteria? As much as I have experience in testing, most of time I got 2-3CFU for sterilized fruit juice.

MemberJuly 4, 2017 at 1:16 pm in reply to: Is an incubator necessary for microbial testing? As I understand the question was about the temperature precision requirements during the test period. For example: what if someone put the test pod into a sterile place where the temperature varies 20C-30C and keep it 3 days instead of 2? Will this work or the tolerance of +-2C is mandatory?

MemberJuly 4, 2017 at 1:06 pm in reply to: What if I add natural oils in emulsion at 40C temperature while cooling up the lotion?@MarkBroussard I checked your advice 13% at 40C with Olivem 100 and 0.1% Xantanum Gum. The emulation is very stable , tested firts at +5C then at +45C storage conditions. It does not separate. As it works well I will use this technique in future formulas also, will add all valuable oils at 35C temperature as I do for active phase. Thanks for your knowledge sharing.

MemberJune 30, 2017 at 1:50 pm in reply to: What if I add natural oils in emulsion at 40C temperature while cooling up the lotion?@Perry : For example 50% of oil phase, or 7.5% of the overall formula. Stable not get divided into two phases. What is the generic rule in this case, if I want to use 10% of the formula as active emollients and do not want to heat them till 75-80C?

MemberJune 30, 2017 at 1:40 pm in reply to: Which co-emulsifier is better to use with Montanov 68 emulsifier?@zwapp: You are right! I found SEPPIC’s specification for Montanov 68 emulsion. Nothing is mentioned about HLB system there. It is interesting, that in lotioncrafter’s site it is described as HLB system working emulsifier. However in the SEPPIC’s recommendations there are lot of other thickening and stabilizing agents provided.
