  • PH regulation of formula wich contains salycilic acid

    Dear colleagues

I am working on a creamy cleanser formula for oily skin,
which contains 1.5% salicylic acid. Its PH value is about 3. I need to increase
it up to 5 as this is required by final product Certificate regulation. Therefore,
I propose to increase it by means of 50% sodium hydroxide solution (adding some
drops). Will this neutralize the effect of salicylic acid in the final product?

The neutralization will produce sodium salicylate, which has interesting properties itself. To know how much you will have to analyze it since it will also depend on the rest of your formula.

I remember someone recommending sodium lactate for that purpose.

I had a similar trial before with the same problem. I used TEA, but if I’m not wrong I was suggested as well to use sodium lactate or sodium citrate.

Thanks for your reply. I selected Sodium Salicylate not pure salicylic acid.

Not sure if that is the best choice.

Sodium salicylate is an antiinflamator mainly.
You can use trisodium citrate for increase the pH. You would probably need 3-4%.
