Sir-thank you. Can you also provide information on how the actives chemically produce the gel? What amounts of sodium/potassium alginate along with calcium are needed for the best gelling effect? Are there ingredients that enhance or reduce the gelling time and consistency?

Has anyone used the Cetiol in a shampoo? Would the Cetiol have any effect on the foaming qualities of a shampoo? What would Cetiol do to the feel of a shampoo?

This is a transient issue that reflects the state of the supply chain today due to the pandemic. Its a collusion by the few silicone manufacturers. They are storing the inventory (like Toyota with cars) and upping the prices to squeeze the market and make $$. Similar to what happened with masks and sanitizers and toilet paper at the start of the pandemic. Once the demand goes down and the pandemic ends this year, the prices will go way down again….once the companies decide it is time to open the flood gates again with their inventory.

The onion oil from the seeds is not the same as the onion juice from the onion itself. In my experience, the onion seed oil does not perform nearly as well as the onion juice from the onion. The onion juice has certain beneficial substances not found in the onion seed. Please feel free to email me if you have an interest in using onion material. Lee lee8lion@gmail.com

    @em88 @Abdullah @ Stanley

Cocamide DEA (1.5%) was added as a foaming agent. Is there a better foaming agent to use as a substitute?

RE: Carbopol aqua SF-1 (3%), will and increase in the amount require more base?

Any comments on the use of Betaine (trimethyl glycine) to thicken?

@ Perry I have no experience with this Black Sea Rod Oil that is claimed to contain lots of PGs but it should be analyzed with a legitimate study. I have no idea what dose to try and was hoping someone had some experience with the ingredient.

@Perry I have visibly seen the eyelashes extend in size with the use of certain PGs when I do a paired comparison study. The PGs work if used at the correct dose within a stable formulation. The downside is the side effect of coloration.

Perry and others-I fully understand what everyone is saying with regards to the FDA and the claims and the lack of robust clinical evidence of benefit with the PG ingredients used.

My question: how do the 20 or more companies in the market place that use PGs in their product such as Revitalash and others handle these issues seemingly without concern? Is it because the PGs they use do not lead to the intended effect and have no side effects at the concentrations used? Is it all marketing hogwash or do they really grow the eyelashes in some people?

I understand that prostaglandins are able to grow eyelashes and are considered to be drugs due to the growth claim(s) but many companies use PG analogs in their eyelash products. It is also my understanding that this natural product has prostaglandins that can cause eyelash growth? Just wondering if anyone had experience with the use of this ingredient…without mentioning the growth claim, so that it is not a drug.

By the way, the onion juice contains some very fascinating substances with high functional activity if used fresh and at the right concentration (toxicity can occur if used at too high a concentration). More research needs to be done to determine the concentration range that gives the optimum effects of onion sulfur-containing substances on skin, hair and nails….

There are NO reputable onion juice/oil suppliers in the USA. Ideally, for the onion juice/oil to work on hair, it should be cold-pressed and freshly used within a week or kept cold to extend shelf life. All the so-called products with onion juice are not very active. I make my own fresh onion juice for my personal use and in my experience, it is as good if not better than Rogaine…..If you find a supplier that is reputable (make certain you do your due diligence), please let me know.

Trying to very slightly thicken an anhydrous lip product without going up on the castor oil, petrolatum and wax that make up 85% of the product.

@Pharma -Does Pentylene glycol by itself act as a preservative?

Does it function at a pH of greater than 10?

Does it function to enhance the preservation of other preservatives?

Olaplex is marketing genius but the active ingredient does have some benefit for hair-it has to perform or else. Nothing new or unique in its performance benefits since the benefits of carboxylic acids on hair have been known for over 50 years. Many vegetable oils at the right amounts are as or more effective at preventing hair damage and breakage-but you cannot make $$ selling ingredients known to be beneficial and cheap so you have to invent something new…it does not have to be better but it has to have a great innovative story.

The innovation behind Olaplex was in the story and the creation of a new chemical entity. A new chemical entity in a new category for hair care-a chemical entity that would revolutionize hair care and deliver on its promise to perform much better than any other product in the market-hit the jackpot-have to give credit where credit is due!

In a nutshell: A couple of chemists were smart enough to create and patent the active ingredient in Olaplex, which is a dimaleate-a novel chemical entity.

Is the Olaplex active ingredient revolutionary and of greater value for hair than many existing products in the market?

I am happy to educate anyone that may have further interest in finding out more-feel free to contact me

Glycerin and HAs do not damage the SC barrier since they are not absorbed unless the SC barrier is disrupted. They sit on top of the skin and grab water from the atmosphere like a sponge and keep the SC barrier intact. If they occlude the barrier, they may prevent TEWL. I think of them as protectants from the damaging effects of water on the SC. I fail to understand all the marketing hype around the HAs….no better than glycerin.

Look, every 10-20 years, the marketers come up with an idea to make certain that cheap and effective ingredients get a bad rap so they can introduce expensive ingredients with sexy unproven science. We did this with mineral oil, petrolatum, silicones, etc., and the list gets larger-the marketers and ingredient companies have to make a living -right? We just follow the party line and formulate their expensive sexy unproven stuff like good soldiers. These days, it is all about the story and not whether it works or not or whether it is any better than the old stuff….

@ Pharma. I agree with your comments. I think the white powder issue can be lessened to a significant degree with the right mix of ingredients. I am working on it and it is not easy to solve.
