@BeardlyGentlemen @ngarayeva001
Use .75% of BTMS-50 and it will stay liquid. During the heating make sure you stir with an overhead stirrer or mini stick blender

I have the same issue. I keep getting this mealy texture. @gregwhite the only difference is that I am making a clay pomade. Have you had any luck getting your emulsion go work? Read my discussions.

Many companies add clay to pomade. You just need to add it after you mix the water and oil phase together. If you add too much it will be dry. Adding just enough will give you low shine and a bit of texture/volume. This is my formula.
Water Phase
Water: 55%
VG: 1%
PEG 7 Glyceryl Cocoate: 4%
Oil phase
BTMS 50: 4%
Ceteareth 20: 8%
Stearic Acid: 2%
PEG 8 Beeswax: 4%
PEG 40 HCO: 5%
Avocado Oil: 2%
kaolin clay: 12%
dead sea clay: 3%
Preservative: .5%

Can you guys recommend any reputable companies?
-
If you’re trying to achieve a matte finish, I would add kaolin clay.

Especially when you use refined mango butter! I never get any crystallization when making beard balms!

Don’t “natural shame” yourself!! It will limit your ability to make awesome products!!! I thought natural was the way to go with pomade, but if you’re in the industry to make a kick ass unorthodox water based styling clay…then go for all ingredients!!

I’ve been using Liquid Germall Plus for all my lotion and water based pomades. Works great. And it is considered a broad spectrum preservative!

MemberAugust 4, 2018 at 4:37 am in reply to: Soaking water phase (unorthodox clay pomade)The name is for marketing purposes. You keep seeing these posts because it is a trend right now especially in California. I am helping a friend who just opened a barber shop. He sells my beard balms, after shave, shaving soaps, etc. The only thing I can’t seem to get right is a water based matte clay. It seems like it is not mixing well. Like the clay is not blending.
-
I use regular beeswax for my pomades and they come out fine. It’s all entirely up to you. Just mix away. It’s not like you will make the lab explode.
-
So you’re saying all the clay should be mixed in the water phase? Then once fully mixed, add the VG and start heating? I saw on the video above that the PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate was added to water phase. And the also the Acrylates C10-30 alkyl methacrylate copolymer was added in the late stage of water phase. I got the acrylates from Making Cosmetics…it marketed as
GelMaker® Style
The video says this ingredient is the secret to this clay pomade. I will be on vacation all this week, so I will be experimenting on this recipe again lol!! Once I start something I can’t stop until it’s perfected!! I’m sure you all feel the same!!

this is an oil based beard oil. no water. It includes olive squalane, argan oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and BTMS-50. I added all of the ingredients into a small glass Pyrex cup and melted. It got up to about 180 degrees. No bits or anything. Then I poured into containers, next day I saw it all clumped up in the bottom. So a few days later I put the beard oil bottles in a water bath to remelt, but unfortunately it didn’t help, following day I still saw it clumped up.
8.53g | 34.1% Squalane
1.25g | 5% BTMS-50
5g | 20% Grapeseed oil
5g | 20% Argan oil
5g | 20% Jojoba oilVitamin E Oil: 0.12g | 0.5%
I am thinking of straining the beard oil. DO NOT want this to go to waste. Olive Squalane is very expensive!!!

this is what I would like to accomplish…
-
I’m going to use Liquid Germall Plus. It is a broad spectrum preservative.
-
I have Castor Jelly from Essential Wholesale and Labs. It includes hydrogenated castor oil and castor oil.
-
try blending essential oils AND fragrance oils. Use test tubes and let the fragrance marinade for a day or two. See if you get a strong aroma.
-
This is for a clay pomade I’m trying to come up with, just not sure if these percentages are ok. This is the first time im using PEG ingredients. At what stage should I add the PEG ingredients and clay?
