If you are formulating by volume (as if you were cooking, for example) then density and/or specific gravity would be a concern - as in, what is the weight of the ingredient in a tablespoon full? When you formulate by weight, everything becomes simpler. You need to put 10 grams of an ingredient into your batch - it doesn’t matter if that 10 grams is a teaspoon-full or a cup full or a gallon-full, you still need 10 grams of it in your batch.Bulk density and tapped bulk density are measures of how much weight of a powder can fit into a specific volume. You are formulating strictly by weight, so neither of those factors come in to play.Hope this helps. -

Stearic Acid can be converted into an emulsifier by saponifying it, i.e, reacting it with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to produce sodium stearate or potassium stearate. -

All formulations should be measured by weight only, which makes the density of any ingredient entirely irrelevant. Whoever told you to use bulk density in formulation either has several screws loose or was playing a cruel trick on you. -

Make this formula below, and then test it. If your testers don’t develop chapped lips, you have a formulation problem with your previous formula. If they do, you have a testing methods problem.

The FDA ha no jurisdiction over weights and measures. This is the FTC and the NIST, and some state regulations also. This might help:

We’ve talked about this before: -

Formulating color cosmetics is a specialized part of this business. If you’d like, I can put you in touch with some people who do this, but it’s not the sort of project that will only cost a few hundred dollars.

Be very careful and use aseptic techniques when adding HA to your serum, or add an additional amount of preservative - the serum looks to be minimally preserved, and probably won’t react well to an infusion of microbes.

MemberJune 30, 2015 at 10:07 pm in reply to: R&D Chemist needed in Newbury Park CaliforniaYeah, but…an average 1,800 square foot house goes for $180-$200,000 in Kennesaw, GA. Total cost would be (slightly) under $1,000/month. A $500,000 house would cost at least twice that monthly. And then there’s taxes…
But, location counts. It’s just that my salary goes so much further down here. And I could expect a reasonable cost of living increase if I wound up moving back to the NY metro area. But the folks in CA seem to think that I should be just fine working in California for about what I’m making here in Georgia - mostly because there are plenty of chemists already working for about that salary there. -

MemberJune 25, 2015 at 6:07 pm in reply to: Need help Formulating liquid to matte lipstickFind trial formulas for liquid lipstick on the web, and use them as starting points. Making a liquid lipstick matte just requires adding mattifying agents.
Or, you could save yourself months, possibly even years, of formulating work and just hire a consultant. It all comes down to how much your time is worth. -
We do it all the time - but it requires a very different process.

And Mark, I think that there are better ways to do this. -

you don’t need a pump, you need a dispensing drum - if you can manufacture in a drum. Otherwise, 6k doesn’t seem too far out of line. Have you looked into leaing?

A job with this level of experience and responsibility usually pays about $60,000/yr. - $80,000/yr., pretty much regardless of whether you work in the New York metro area, the Chicago metro area, or the Los Angeles metro area. You might even make a little less if you are away from these centers of cosmetic R&D. And yet, the cost of living in these places is very different.I could never afford to live in the LA area, as much as I’d like to. -
My guess would be that either they’re using the lactic acid as their pH adjuster and the citric acid is coming in as part of a pre-blended raw material, or vice-versa. If you’re buying each component seperately, you should be fine with using just citric acid.

As long as you use (and test for) adequate preservation, you should be ok. Remember to test stability, though.
