Potential risk = very high -
We use Potassium Oleate, but lather is a problem.

That’s really interesting, @DragoN. I’ll have to try that. Is that 10% of the whole formula, or just the oils?
-
Good, sounds like a fun project. My best guess on milling is that they’re using liquid CO2 or liquid nitrogen to keep the mills from gumming up. Without it, the milling will take much longer.

Oh, and dress really needs to be a cut above business casual, if you want to be taken seriously.
Let us know also if you have trouble getting a badge. Apply now - it would be frustrating to be turned away at the door.

If you go to the NYSCC, wear comfy shoes, bring at least 300 business cards (leave them everywhere, you never know who can be helpful), and let us know if you need a recommendation for where to stay - the show is free, the hotels…aren’t.

If you need something, post here. We might be able to help. (unofficially, of course).
I’m currently making soap for a living, so I’d be happy to advise you if you want to take a shot at it.

That really doesn’t tell me anything I need to know.
Let’s look at it this way.
If you had an enormous budget, really yuuge, in the 2-3 million dollar range, and you were going to start national distribution all at once, that would be one kind of project. You would need a certain kind of consultant and lab/manufacturer.
If you had a really small budget, in the $20 -$30,000 range, and you were going to start small, with a few customers, and grow from there, that would be a different kind of project. You would need an entirely different kind of consultant and lab/manufacturer.
If you were trying to start doing this on the tiniest of shoestrings, in the $5 - $10,000 range, well, you’d really need a different approach altogether.
Starting a business selling cosmetics is not any different than starting a business selling shoe polish, for example. What have you got in place in terms of a business plan, etc.?

I can’t see that grinding it yourself is going to be worth your time. Are you sure that you can’t bring it in from Canada or the US?
And yes, I agree with adding during cool-down.

First, that’s a very, very high level of silicone. What are you using this for?

What kind of budget do you have?

But do most people have batch tubs, or are they dedicated shower stalls? This stuff is great for itchy and/or sunburned skin, even mosquito bites. I know that Aveeno sells a whole lot of it up here.
-
That aveeno bath powder has been a lifesaver in my house a number of times. If you folks don’t have it in drugstores in Mexico, this might be a very good business opportunity.

MemberApril 28, 2016 at 2:42 pm in reply to: Product concentration, homogeneity and reproducibilityIf you are using a 3-roll mill, you will need to invest in a Hegman Gauge or some other method (microscopy, usually) to determine the particle size of what you are grinding. Otherwise, how will you know that you are finished grinding, or that you have the gap set correctly?
If you do not know when you are finished, you run the risk of wasting time and money running the mill for longer than needed, among other problems.

The state and local regulations in the NY metro area (NY, NJ, CT) make running a business like this problematic, if not impossible. Chemophobia runs high there. Certainly impossible to do this and make a profit. I strongly suspect the same problem exists on the entire East Coast.
Maybe we can help, at least with inventory control, if not anything else. Why do you seem to run out so often?
-
Don’t bother to use silicone in soap/detergent. Even if you can get it emulsified well enough to be stable, it will then be so well emulsified that none of it will stay on skin.
Use the handwash to wash hands. Use a moisturizer to replace the skin oils the handwash removed.

If they swell, the particles aren’t fine enough to make a colloidal suspension.
Sounds like this is urgent, so can you get your hands on the colloidal oat meal bath powder by Aveeno? (Aveeno Soothing Bath Treatment) http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=16475&catid=290055&aid=338666&aparam=16475&kpid=16475&CAWELAID=120142990000054905&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=15436315333&CATCI=pla-87145509384
It comes in packets, and should mix into shampoo easily. Maybe pre-mix with glycerine.
If it weren’t an emergency, I’d just buy some from makingcosmetics, or get some from these guys:
https://www.in-cosmetics.com/__novadocuments/2743
http://www.in-cosmetics.com/__novadocuments/6306If you absolutely have to make it yourself, I think you’ll need a coffee/spice grinder or a kitchen blender to get the particles fine enough.
-
There are no glaring errors that I can see, but…how are you getting the SCI into solution?
-
Looks like that’s coming from RITA:

About 80% of the time, Wikipedia has the info.
The key is to get the IUPAC or other chemical name of the material, (usually from the SDS) then google it and put “synthesis” after the name.

2) Be able to make it clear to your supplier that you will be a repeat customer, and will buy from them often.
3) Be willing and able to discard the entire product, and replace it with another from a different company, and write off the loss.Otherwise, buying chemicals from Alibaba has about the same amount of risk as dialing a random chinese phone number and ordering from whoever answers.

Copy it into Word, then save it as a plain text document, then try to cut and paste again.
-
There are protocols that take into account high-temperature instability - but you’d be better off adding more suspending agent and/or reducing particle size.
-
First, the fact that you can’t easily mix your material after adding silica tells me that you have a low-shear and/or underpowered or undersized mixer - increase your shear considerably, using a either a long time with a high-shear mixer (homogenizer) or a shorter time with a very high shear mixer (3-roll mill, colloid mill or micro-fluidizer).
The thicker the mixture, the better, for the purposes of dispersion. You really need a dispersant in your formula, as well. Something like Ganex WP-660.
Also, looking at your agglomerates under a microscope should tell you if they’re zinc oxide or silica.
