The problem, Perry, is that we can’t carry a bathroom around with us…

Can you get sugar? Build a still. 1Kg sugar -> 1 Kg ethanol.

Hot-process soap at pH11 is perfectly adequate without adding anything else, and it already has glycerine in it.

I suspect that the carbomer was coming out of Chinese factories.

IMO the fragrance is far too high and I would use 1% max.
The soap base is not a good match for the rest of the formula and will react with the citric acid to form (smelly) free fatty acids etc therefore, remove the soap base and reduce the citric acid to get pH 5 - 6.
Polysorbate? Why? Get rid of it.
Super dry skin? Use a refattener, eg PEG-7 glyceryl cocoate, and a water-soluble silicone ester, eg Silsense DW-16, which should markedly improve performance.
acrylates for thickening? poor performance. Use 1.5% PEG-150 stearate (max) and if insufficient, Crothix liquid or Glucamate VLT.

I recommend you use Ultrez-20. 940 is a short-flow carbomer and Ultrez long-flow, has better sensorials and also gives clear gels in alcohol. Your 0.6% lavender EO seems too high for my liking, I used 0.1% and it’s quite noticeable and lasting at that level. It seemed to me that frequent use would produce lavender hands… the reason I used Glucam is that it’s similar to glycerin but much less sticky.
Unfortunately I am out of stock of Ultrez and guess what? I cannot find any anywhere. Alternatives please?

They might be eggs laid by the Blusher Beetle, which is making a comeback.

Because that’s the amount in coffee. Caffeine is potentially dangerous in large amounts.

sodium cocoamphoacetate produces excellent small-bubble foam. But it must be combined with other surfactant(s) to work well.

This was not IPA it was 70% denatured ethanol from the shop.

400mg / kilo of shampoo would be the maximum I would use. Our specialty shampoo is based on actual coffee. That’s not the only active ingredient though.

    Surfactants are often synergistic.

Don’t use it without carefully calculating the concentration. I would not use it at a higher concentration than that of percolated coffee.

Resveratrol is almost impossible due to the solubility issue. Licorice ‘extract’ well, that depends on how much licorice is in it… I import mine from China. 12% extract is in the form of a yellow-brown powder so expect quite a lot of colour if you use it.  The potassium salt of the pure acid is soluble. Any kind of liquid extract probably has risible amounts of licorice in it.

I just made this. Unfortunately I had to use 940 instead of Ultrez-20 because my Ultrez had gone solid. So with that, and the 0.1% EO, it’s not clear, but the overall effect is excellent, good sensorial, after-aroma of lavender, non-tacky.
Method: Dissolve aloe and EO in alcohol, add carbomer to water, leave to swell, rapid mixing, then add the PG, E20 and Silsense. Mix well, add the TEA, with slow mixing, then slowly add the alcohol mix, blend, that’s it.

Vinegar is acetic acid. Acetic acid has a powerful, penetrating smell. There is no way to modify or mask it effectively. I suggest not using it.

March 6, 2020 at 7:26 pm in reply to: Using Castile Soap Instead Of A Normal Surfactant?

If you check here, there are countless threads that explain why the pH of soap cannot be brought down. It splits into FFAs and water. Useless.
Seondly there are also many threads that explain why soap is a terrible shampoo. It gets really, really tiresome explaining this over and over. But just for you:
Soap reacts with dissolved salts in the water to produce soap scum that bonds to the hair making it dry, brittle, and tangled. This is precisely the reason why modern shampoo was invented!

No. Absolutely awful idea. No, the pH can NOT be brought down.
