Stop loss conditioner design
I am looking to design a stop loss conditioner. I have some mamey oil here which is supposedly good for seborrheic dermatitis (one of the causes of hair loss). What else should I include, do you think?

You’re asking about a product to stop hair loss? Minoxidil is the only proven topically applied ingredient that has any benefit.
But as unproven and likely not working ingredients go, caffeine is popular these days.

Yes, I was thinking of caffeine. I will have to import it though. Not salicylic acid? After my trials of licorice, I think I will include that.

There are a few clinical studies to support the anti-inflammatory activity of oenothein-b.

Yes in Mexico City there appears to be a distributor. I will talk to them. Does look interesting I agree. Perhaps I should make it clear that I am not looking to “invent” a magic regrowth formula, but something that will stop excessive hair loss, which is often caused by fungal problems or sebhorreic dermatitis. As such I am taking a holistic approach in that I want to:
reduce inflammation (aloe vera, calendula)
stimulate scalp circulation (caffeine, quinine)
kill yeasts such as malessezia (antifungals - monolaurin, thyme extract, essential oils tea tree and neem)
clear the hair follicles of embedded sebum (jojoba oil, SA)
+ the “magic” bits that “might” encourage growth:
stevia extract

Hello Belassi, I know this post is old, but Iam new to the forum and wanted to add some info just to see if it helps you out. I agree with Perry Minoxidil is the only proven hair growth product in the market, how ever these ingredients some people swear are great for preventing hair loss or promoting hair growth: Rosemary. Peppermint/Spearmint and Cinnamon. I would also add a “Massage in scalp” disclaimer as this stimulates hair growth as well.

Well the new shampoo seems to be effective, according to our first customer who has stopped using hair extensions, she told us. But who knows?

What about ketoconazole? In this country up to 1% can be used in cosmetics, 2% for pharmaceuticals.

Even though this is an old thread … @belassi: you don’t seem to have any alpha-5 reductase inhibitors in your formula, which is the key to reducing hair loss.

The problem is that either you decide to make what can only be classed as a drug; and then you can look at everything from Minoxidil to HGH-Epilatory Factor… or … you make a cosmetic and then, you’re basically in a ridiculous position of tacitly saying, “Well yes it is a cosmetic and yes, it’s true, under the regulations cosmetics can have no effect on the body processes, but, well, you know what I mean, sport? Nudge nudge wink wink.”
So you research and read many many patents and scientific extracts and you try things and mostly they have no effect. But sometimes the opposite effect.
For instance the trial with rats involving hair loss.
Some people seem to believe one of our products works. One tester reported a distinct difference with one ingredient in particular, which I’d included as a result of reading a patent. But do any ingredients really have an effect? Who knows? There’s such a thing as the placebo effect and for that matter, perhaps the user was using, before, some awful scalp-irritating shampoo with aggressive surfactant and nasty preservative.
Still, it’s fun to experiment. -

How are the results so far with the cofffee shampoo (the one with licorice)? -
The shampoo appears to work for some people. Typically a person who is actually losing hair. It does not seem to work if hair loss took place some time ago and has been established. A client sent me some interesting before / after photos just yesterday. This is the nearest we’ve got to a treatment, to date. I need to make a conditioner version so am just ordering some new items for that.

Bioforce / Dr Vogel a Swiss company used to have a product made from Onion juice for hair loss. I don’t know if the product is still around.

The country I come from sometimes they use sulfur soap.
