    Hi All
Happy 2016! Hope its a great one for everyone.

Been playing with a simple gel formula for a while now to incorporate pigment or dye. What I’m actually trying to replicate is a type of wood stain but in a cosmetic formula (I know that sounds a bit bizzare).  What I’m trying to achieve is a water based coloured gel that can be applied to hair with reasonably strong colour coverage.

So… I have a very basic gel, Water/Ethyl Alcohol/Carbomer. Initially I used water soluble dye, then a solvent dye, and then predispersed pigments. Best colour coverage on hair was of course the pigments, but now I have to solve the shine issue…and nothing seems to be working.

I guess I’m looking for suggestions as to how I can incorporate ingredients into a water/alcohol based gel loaded with pigment that will give me at least a natural shine without having to produce a lotion/cream.  I dont know if its possible and I’m barking up the wrong tree or if I will actually have to resort to a lotion.

I have tried using Pemulen with Carbomer to incorporate Phenyltrimethicone into the gel, but with the pigment load to get reasonable coverage on the hair I’m still getting a result with as much shine as a house brick.  The dyes give a reasonable result in the shine department, but even at 5% still not enough colour deposition on the hair in a gel.

Any Suggestions would help atm :-)

    Thanks CB

Not exactly sure what you’re going for.
So I’ll take a shot in the dark…
    Mica?
    Mica Pigments?

Shine on hair comes from a smooth uninterrupted film. The size of the pigment particless you’re using interrupt that film, so you’re not getting shine. Solutions? Make the pigment particles smaller than the film thickness, either by reducing the particle size of the pigments, or increasing the film thickness, or both.
