Your formula’s ratio is not too bad.
But Im not sure why you have to try free/thraw storage? That one is only for stability test (which is at extreme condition).

For other ppl comment about emulsifying effect of Centrimonium Chloride, yes it can be a good emulsifier at acid pH condition.

Yeah, since it’s my first emulsion I just wanted to get it right, stability and all, before moving on to anything more complicated.

Maybe it’s too much, but I feel like if I’m not able to create such a simple stable emulsion, then how am I supposed to create emulsions with other more complex systems haha

I was under the impression that Cetrimonium Chloride is an emulsifier. Is it not?

@”Dr Catherine Pratt” do clay masks have a particular characteristic that would prevent AHAs from irritating my skin?

In case anyone else is interested in this subject, I found this wonderful book. The title is a bit off as the book covers many other AHAs and not just Glycolic Acid, but it’s got some very nice explanations that are very easy to understand, and lots of references for further research. I will keep looking for information on all AHA related subjects and post it here when I find it. Enjoy!

@SunSkin - yes, we do cover them in the formulation course but we go more in-depth in our raw material course.

I can’t seem to find this course on your website, there’s an older post with a link but that just sends me to the Practical Formulating and Natural Cosmetics courses.

Would you mind sharing the course link with me? Thanks!

What kind of pigment are you using to color your shampoo? As ketchito mentioned, your formula could benefit from a UV protector, that’s what we did with our liquid hand soap when the color started to fade after being in direct sunlight for about a month.

But there’s really no way of knowing if that’s your issue without knowing what your whole formula looks like, with all components and percentages, and knowing more details about what is going on, if this change is happening during stability testing at high temperautures, or just sitting in your self undisturbed for 15 days.

Very interesting read indeed, thank you Perry! It really is a lot more complex than what I had orinally thought, I should know it’s always like that by now haha

Thank you for your help, I’ll message the company to see if they can give me any information on the matter. Very useful resources!

  • Very interesting, I thank you all for your responses. I was very confused about the way these regulations would work.
Regarding the 30% AHA in the peeling solution, would you consider the product safe to use for it’s intended market (the general public), despite the CIR statement that such a product is only supposed to be applied by trained professionals? Is it possible for The Ordinary to get in trouble for disregarding the information from the CIR?
  • Yes, I’m aware that it’s a rinse off product. Do regulations for those specific ingredients change if the product is meant to stay on the skin? Because professional peels are not supposed to stay on the skin either, but they’re still considered professional only products.
And while the acids wouldn’t be working at full strength, if my calculations are correct, they would still work above the 0.5% concentration covered by the OTC monograph, wouldn’t they?
Presuming they don’t work at the OTC monograph concentration, is it legal to include OTC amounts of active substances and claim your product is a cosmetic if you’re not formulating them to be fully active?

Hi! My name is Andy and I have an associate’s degree in pharmaceutical chemistry (I think that would be the equivalent, as I live in Latin America and I’m not sure if there’s a similar training level in the United States). I’ve had a passion for makeup and skincare ever since I can remember and I would love to further my knowledge on the subject. So far I have only experimented with simple skin care formulas like face wash and lotion that I use on myself, to customize my skin care routine. Eventually I would love to create skin care or makeup products for other people as well, but right now I’m happy with making my own products. I absolutely love this forum! It’s helped me solve my beginner mistakes so many times and I’ve gained tons of knowledge from you guys. I haven’t found another forum with so many experienced professionals that are so generous with their time and wisdom! Truly a one of a kind treasure on the internet.
