I don’t believe Sodium hyaluronate can be used as a gelling agent. You will need some type of carbomer or gum to gel the water BUT you can also use the sodium hyaluronate with it for the hydration functionality.
What type of gel are you trying to make and for what type of skin?

This emulsifier is my “go-to” and I’m considering using it in a night time face cream featuring HA. Any help is truly appreciated!????

What would the percentages be? Should I add a preservative to this solution? What would the shelf-life be? Thanks!????

Beginning formulatorApril 12, 2024 at 2:37 pm in reply to: Can I alter lotion formula to make emulsified body butter? Thanks for all the comments and helpful suggestions!
I actually have a chemistry degree and worked in the medical field for eight years before going to education and finishing it out in Cybersecurity….so I’m not as much of a “mommy DIY-er” as I come across ????….. BUT I am looking at making formulating as my Act 3!
My question was rooted in the fact that if we add ingredients to the oil phase, we subtract the same percentage from the water input, so it just made sense to me keep the total phases as balanced as possible. I view the phases as a see-saw. I could be wrong in my thinking. Not the first nor the last time I’ll be mistaken.
Ritamulse is a more natural alternative to Ewax NF and Myristyl is the natural alt to Stearic Acid. I was trying to stay away from Glyceryl Stearate and PEG 100 Stearate, so I had already considered using C10-C18 Triglycerides (Butter Pearls).
I’ll definitely lower the glycerin and possibly add aloe vera juice as an additional humectant. Or maybe Honeyquat……hmmmmm.
Thanks again everyone! I truly appreciate the help!????

Wouldn’t you have to use HMW HA at a high concentration to get a “gel”? Unless the viscosity doesn’t need to be thick and fluidity is subjective.

Beginning formulatorJune 12, 2024 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Where to find Dermofeel PA (should I make my own?)So if I’m creating a toner, no need for an emulsifier (solubilizer at best if I add essential/fragrance oils)…it would be okay to use the sodium phytate in solid form, correct? And I could add it to the heated water phase if I’m dissolving the Geogard Ultra prior to combining all other ingredients, no? Please advise. Thanks!

Funny you mention MM because I was thinking “why am I changing up my game when I love the feel of a lotion with it?” Oh I know why…I was trying to stay with COSMOS/ECOCERT ingredients and I can’t fully determine if MM fits the bill.
I think I’m going back to things that work for me and are still safe for cosmetic use.
And Cetyl Alcohol is a must!

Beginning formulatorMay 28, 2024 at 9:32 am in reply to: Where to find Dermofeel PA (should I make my own?)Hi! When I did the calculations of the aqueous solution percentage in the formula, it roughly came out to 0.10% (0.10 grams) of the solid. I’ve been using the solid at 0.20%. Is that too much? Any help is appreciated! ????

Already in the works!

I thought about that earlier. I’ll probably use Geogard 221 and disregard using a solubilizer completely. That way I’ll get rid of the “soapy” feel and only have the pH shift to contend with. I might purchase Ultra. Thanks for the responses!????

pH has to remain around 4.0 because the potassium sorbate loses some of it’s effectiveness around 4.5 and more if it gets to 5.0.

pH = 4.0

Beginning formulatorMay 10, 2024 at 7:23 pm in reply to: Ecomulse emulsifier (aka Ritamulse SCG, CreamMaker Mix)Thanks! Yes I’m still using the green goblin, it’s being keyed up with glycerin for the humectant property and I can afford both of those right now, and the HA is being added post emulsification. I created a 1% solution prior. I’ve seen formulas where it’s added before heating the water phase and it just didn’t sit right with me ????????♀️. Thanks again!

Beginning formulatorApril 12, 2024 at 8:15 pm in reply to: Can I alter lotion formula to make emulsified body butter?Definitely top priority. I more than likely will not exceed 30% butters and oils combined. Going to use 2-3 emulsifiers to help with that percentage. Thanks!????

Beginning formulatorApril 12, 2024 at 8:11 pm in reply to: Can I alter lotion formula to make emulsified body butter?I see we’re going to be friends!????????
Okay…I’ll let go of the green goblin. I already have glyceryl stearate and PEG 100 stearate, propanediol 1,3, both cetearyl and cetyl alcohols, and Butter Pearls so I’ll start with those.
I got my hot plate and analytical balance off eBay, no judgement, just gotta verify the source of the ingredients when buying online no matter the provider. I started with Amazon and I still get some things from there especially when I’m in a pinch for time.
I’ll check out your suggestions. Thanks!????
