You can dissolve salicylic in propanediol. Or propylene glycol if you want to use it. I would say that the combination you made is very drying. I personally think it will be better without alcohol. Also there’s some information that witch hazel is an irritant.

@MJL maybe you order a small bottle from the lotioncrafter and add at a high concentration in your formula, use it for a month and see how you feel about it? Btw, they have very short shelf life, so it makes sense to order the smallest bottle. They can be heated up to 80 C, but keep in mind they destroy viscosity. I recently read that they should be added to the water phase not the cool down phase (which I always did). Have not tried yet.

@MJL, I was a skincare junkie before I started formulating. I tried so many different products that it’s actually hard to believe now. So I have some experience with commercial products with ‘claim’ ingredients. I respect the professionals of this forum a lot and very grateful for their input. But  there is a couple of ingredients that are not proven to work by science but they do for me. Maybe it’s a placebo effect although I really try to stay sceptical. Ceramides is one of them for me. Frankly I shove them everywhere where the formula allows ? Feel a bit guilty and try to be scientific

This is not how shampoo is made. This is some DIY soapy water and your first question, if you really want to make this strange thing, should be “How do I preserve this?”

There is a ceramide complex with exactly the same ingredients sold by lotioncrafter: http://www.lotioncrafter.com/ceramide-complex.html
It is cheaper than makincosmetics and they give more details on how to use it (temperature, phase etc.)

The product you are proposing will be very different from the benchmark product above because:
    1) The product above doesn’t have vegetable oils you listed (some of which are not very stable due to high content of linoleic acid). The product above uses “synthetic” emollients.
    2) The product above uses a polymer (Sepinov EMT) as an emulsifier. You will not achieve the same texture and application with “ewax”
    3) What is “ewax”?
    4) I am guessing you are trying to add skin brightening properties to your sunscreen by adding extracts, however these extracts are marketing claim ingredients but they will not do much for the skin brightening.
So maybe you should keep it simple, skip most of these extracts and oils and make a simple lotion with Zinc oxide. Also, add a humectant (glyceryin, butylene glycol etc.)

@Majman formula with INCI names not “ewax”.

    1) What is ewax? There are hundreds of them. INCI please.
    2) As per my observation most commercial brands use alcohol denat. What is a purpose of alcohol in this product?
    3) Vitamin E can tolerate 70C for a short period of time. Most of waxes and oils melt at 70C.
    4) Post the entire formula. It is all a “theory” without details.

I think the fact that it’s handmade is a part of their marketing story.

Essential oils are irritants. Lavender oil isn’t a great idea.

Are you sure that alpha arbutin isn’t sensitive to high temperature? Most of actives are. Unrefined butter has worse spreadability and less stable.

L-Ascorbic Acid is one of the least stable ingredients. I have no experience with extracts and can not comment on it. If rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol, then it’s not the one that should be used in skincare.

And citric acid to reduce the pH. Solution in water.

I agree with @Dtdang shea is very often mixed with jojoba and other oils. Are we talking about refined or non refined shea butter here?

@Microformulation, thank you for correcting me. It might really sound confusing. I was talking about PEG-150  distearate:
    https://www.makingcosmetics.com/PEG-150-Distearate_p_303.html

and  PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate (Crothix Liquid by Croda).

The glucosides and betaine act like emulsifiers. I prefer PEG-150 (particularly crothix loquid) because you add it in the end and control thickness. You can add more until you are happy with the result. Carbopol is less predictable. Maybe I am not too experienced with surfactants but I personally find crothix easier to work with. BTW if you use anionic and amphoteric surfactants you don’t need a thickener. In this case amphoteric and non-ionic are used.

I never add more than 3% of glycerin to a leave on products. I my go to combination is butylene glycol, propanediol and glycerin but not sure it will work for a ‘natural’ surfactant product.

@Gunther in surfactant products glycerine can be high and it doesn’t leave sticky afterfeel. Xantham does have a slimy feel. But it’s a baby product, so perceived safety is more important than aesthetics. I personally prefer PEG-150 (or crothix liquid that also contains peg-150) to carbopol as a surfactant system thickener, but it won’t work for a baby product because of marketing. Carbopol is also ‘a chemical’. I don’t have experience with guar gum.

Ferulic acid and vitamin E are great. Vitamin C isn’t stable if it’s L-Ascorbic Acid, use a derivative like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate. To mix oil and water, add an emulsifier.

You will waste a good ingredient. Soap has only  one function, to remove dirt. You will not get brightening properties of alpha arbutin by adding it to a soap. Use it in a serum instead. And make sure you adjust the pH. You can buy all ingredients discussed above in lotioncrafter.

Yes, makes sense. I was just thinking that it would be avoided in food for the same chemophobic reasons.

Are you going to add alpha arbutin to a soap?
