Appreciate your insight! -

MemberNovember 28, 2022 at 2:10 pm in reply to: Tear-free, non eye irritating cream cleanserThank you @Paprik, ill try that out. Problem with reducing the surfactants is that the product doesnt produce enough foam. But maybe thats a compromise we make. Ill let you know how the trial goes.
@PhilGeis okay
@ketchito I did look to see what other brands use in tear free formulas which is why I selected the Decyl Glucoside combo. Others use PEGs but im trying to see if I can make something without PEGs that could still be tear-free.
Thank you for all your comments! I appreciate it very much!

MemberSeptember 25, 2017 at 7:04 pm in reply to: ALS based cleanser/ Aqua SF1 questionThank you @DAS Okay ill give the cellulose a shot and also try increasing the surfactant. Will let you know.
Do you think reducing the aqua to 1% might help the bubbles? Or will that not be enough to get rid of the aeration? -

MemberSeptember 25, 2017 at 5:04 pm in reply to: ALS based cleanser/ Aqua SF1 questionThank you @belassi , We dont have a vacuum mixer..
so ill stay away from the sf 1. I made a batch without any aqua sf -1 this morning, the system only took about 1.2% salt and it did thicken the system but it wasnt quite the same as with aqua sf 1. It was not “gel-ly” enough.. and since this is an existing product, I want to try to be as close to the current product as possible.

maybe try pectin, or combination of sclerotium gum/xanthan gum/cellulose

@bobzchemist and @milliachemist you guys are awesome! I used 2% Arlacel 165: Glyceryl Stearate and PEG-100 Stearate with 1% Promulgen
Cetearyl Alcohol and Ceteth-20..instead of cetyl alcohol and it worked!!!
My formula is whiteThanks guys!

@bobzchemist Doesnt octocrylene help solubilize/stabilize avobenzone?? I have 5% octocrylene and 2% avobenzone..

I am using Cetyl Alcohol at 2 % and Isostearyl Alcohol as an emollient.. I didnt think i needed more emulsifier since i am trying to make the overall feel as less greasy as possible…
Oh and I also have 1% of Ganex 220 V in the oil phase..Should I add some more emulsifier you think? -
This is all in India though — which already doesn’t have enough(Read:No) regulations on cosmetics..

MemberJanuary 15, 2014 at 11:41 am in reply to: Choosing surfactant blends for a low pH Glycolic face wash@Chemwizard you’re welcome. I totally understand what you say about the final feel but I have read previously (not tried it myself yet) that adding a little alcohol to your formula decreases the snotty (for lack of a better word) feel of the xanthan in the final formula —- @milliachemist What are your thoughts? Isnt there a way to reduce the snotty after feel?
What if you combine xanthan with a small amount of another thickener — say cellulose? OR Mg Al silicate? -

MemberJanuary 14, 2014 at 5:34 pm in reply to: Choosing surfactant blends for a low pH Glycolic face wash@perry Or Xanthan Gum? Since Xanthan thickens at lower pH levels.. and works well with the salt content too!
-
@milliachemist Ill give that a shot too.. I have more of a natural/whole foods compliant products background — so I am not too familiar with synthetics and end up using more naturals than would like to. Thanks for the recommendation!
@ perry didn’t think I would need a preservative with just 5% water.. oops! Thanks for the advice, I’ll make sure to add some next time. -
How about benzalkonium chloride?
-
I would look at playing with the pH of your formula. Have you tried this? A lower pH of about 4.5 - 5.5 should give you more conditioning than a higher pH one.
Another thing to consider is lowering the concentration of surfactants or using milder surfactants..Hope this helps! -
Looks like this formula could be thickened with salt and the runny texture could be the xanthan gum too. I would go for a combination of Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate and Cocoamphoacetate. These seem to work best at clear shampoos.

The Glucosides are hard to acheive clarity with. Try Sodium Cocoamphoacetate instead. You may have better clarity with that.
