I am developing Sulfat free shampoo in that I want to develop clear shampoo & I am using Decyl glucosie, Cocamidopropyl betain, Coco glucoside &Sodium Lauryl Sarcosinate but I am not getting clearity, it is coming our translucent. so how I can achieve the clearity.

One more thing I want to know that I want to use PEG 150 distearate & I want to know that PEG 150 distearate I want to use with surfactant & heat it or I have to add in water and heat it.

How about adding the PEG-150 DS to the already heated water, much easier way out.

Re the clarity I guess you would have to choose the right combination of surfactants and thickeners, mind that it is not really easy to achieve everything easily with sulfate free formulations.

    Good luck.

    thanks dear milliachemist

I have tried small batch like 100g I add PEG 150 DS in hot water and mix with glass rod so all PEG 150 DS stick to the glass rod even 80°C also not mix properly in hot water.

Then heat separately and add, think that would be the best way for you.

You can add PEG-150 DS in hot water too but the stirrer should be on and the material should go directly into vortex to avoid clumping or sticking to the wall.

100g is a rather small size batch.  You might have more luck if you were using 400g batches.  They fit well into a 500 mL beaker and you get good mixing.

The Glucosides are hard to acheive clarity with. Try Sodium Cocoamphoacetate instead. You may have better clarity with that.

I use Na Cocoamphoacetate with few other things like lauramine oxide and a polymer thickener, have nice foaming, clarity and good afterfeel.

Coincidentally I’ve just used a totally clear (like pure water) “sulfate-free” shampoo… Ingredients on the next message…

    Shiseido 2e Shampoo
Water, Alcohol, Potassium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Glycerin, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Polyquaternium-10, Xanthan Gum, Triethylhexanoin, Citric Acid, Trisodium HEDTA, Sodium Citrate.
But its texture is extremely runny since it’s for the Japanese market (Japanese costumers don’t like thick shampoos, they prefer very thin textures for shampoos). It foams up a lot…

@pma if you are not looking at viscosity which is one of the most important parameters for us then life is a bit easier on development part ;-)

Looks like this formula could be thickened with salt and the runny texture could be the xanthan gum too. I would go for a  combination of Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate and Cocoamphoacetate. These seem to work best at clear shampoos.

Whenever we start Sulfate free shampoo development what is the basic thing that we have to take care before starting & how we have to select the surfactant ?

What is the basic key point to keep in mind before start sulfat free formulation development.

Anybody knows that Jaguar Excel (Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride) & PEG 150 distearate will go to gather in clear liquid shampoo ?

    @vjay - there’s no reason they shouldn’t be compatible in a shampoo.

I’ve been able to achieve a clear shampoo using pretty much the same ingredients you use and adding polysorbate 20.

Iv just attempted to use peg150 distearate as a thickener in my shampoo. I added it to the heated water phase but it clumped. I used it at 2%
