I would try to get as many samples as possible to test. In my experience these natural solubilizers often only work for a small percentage of ingredients i try them on, and often must be used at a much higher ratio when they do.

@ketchito i just let it cool on its own while mixing, i dont keep it heated after the phases are combined. I usually mix fast for the first couple of minutes and then start mixing slower all the way down to room temp.

So it sounds like i dont have to worry about homogenizing it? that is good to hear.

No, it’s not my only emulsifier. I got some montanov, GSC and carbomer in there too. But i love the feeling of the AVC. The formula is perfect, might be my favorite thing ive ever made, so i dont want to change anything.

i can mix it just fine with my overhead mixer…i just cant homogenize it. It’s probably not necessary i suppose, it just makes me feel better about things when i know it has been homogenized.

I’ve been thinking of getting one of those kitchenaid mixers for thick stuff like this. Are they pretty good about not introducing air while mixing? Maybe it depends on the type of mixing attachment you use with it?

  • Well I used to get fragrances from a couple other places but after I discovered wellington I realized that it seems my other suppliers were just getting their oils from them too.

Am i limited in what sense? I could always use a bigger selection of fragrance oils, if that’s what you mean.

I’ve tried working work lamesoft at least 50 times. Always a pain. Always separates eventually.

  • @Graillotion  The scent i like is called jasmine water, but “like” is a bit of an overstatement here. I am using it as part of a blend I am making with a few other scents. It does its job in that blend pretty well, but on its own I would probably never use it.

Scent is such a subjective thing… so what i like you might not like…. I have probably ordered half of what wellington carries and more from other places. There are so few that I actually love. I usually end up blending them.

In the past couple days I have actually successfully made what seems to be a few stable test batches with almost zero soaping using Montanov 68, SSG, GMS, and a little polymer and carbomer. I’m very happy with them.

But now I have three months of waiting for the stability test to complete during which I could become very disappointed if things start separating. So I want to make a few more with different methods so i have some backup… just in case. Zen+EMT+Cetearyl seems a good place to start. Polymers dont soap and have been very good to me stability-wise.

    I want very thick!

Hmmm I swear EMT appears much more tolerant of electrolytes compared to AVC in the same formula. You sure it’s just marketing? I think there might be some truth to these claims.

I will try our some of your experiments and report back my findings.

@ngarayeva001i think i might try that. What % of EMT and Zen would you recommend i start with for 20% oils?

well they tell me no silicones so that ingredient they’d probably take issue with. But if you know of one that doesnt end in cone…please let me know.

@jemolian see above… i dont know either, because it is not MY reasoning, i am just following orders.

Because the people i am making this for are not aware of and do not care about the “eths”, only the PEGs.

  • I’m not sure your HPMC is enough to suspend anything.

Have you considered Aqua SF-1 (acrylates copolymer)?
I tried for a loooooong time to suspend particles with more natural methods but I finally gave up and went with SF-1, which works wonderfully.

the only other thing that worked for me was a high amount of xanthan gum, but i had to use so much of that the consistency of the body wash became unbearably snotty.

  • that seems like plenty of stability testing to me…not aware of any others.

what are you suspending the charcoal with?

@jemolian Thanks for the tip. Do you think a stabilizer like carbomer is needed here with the 68 and AVC? (And I’ll probably throw in SSG + GMS + Cetyl too as graillotion suggested.)

@jemolian i’d prefer a thick, creamy, rich, texture. the more of that the better really. my preference for texture is flexible, however my hatred of soaping is not. I am going to give the 68 a try today, will report back how it goes.

I will definitely give this a try, thanks.

In this scenario would you add TEC to heated oil phase or during cool down?

Often times for me a simple mix of water and glycerin before bed can moisturize my face better than anything. if you have an aloe vera plant sitting around somewhere maybe squeeze some gel outta that and put it on your face too. Sometimes simple and natural is best….

My problem is not so much getting a stable emulsion, that I can and have been doing with 202 easily enough. The problem arises in that the amount of emulsifier i need to use for a stable emulsion produces a little bit of soaping. Not a ton, probably an acceptable amount for 95% of people, but I want no soaping at all, whatsoever.

If only I could add dimethicone, problem would be solved methinks.

I’m starting to think it’s just not possible to have a stable body butter with zero dimethicone and zero soaping.

But i will continue to play around with these different emulsifiers until I figure it out…or go crazy in the process.

Yes unfortunately it must be PEG-free and dimethicone free, believe me i wish i could use 165 my life would so much easier.

I will try your suggested combo with 68. what flavor am i adding when i add GMS “to taste”? or do you just mean for thickening?

I will absolutely include that emollient on my next thai order.

    thanks!

isnt cetrimonium chloride a cationic surfactant, which would be incompatible with your anionic SLSA?
