For gums it’s usually best to disperse them in something first before adding to water, otherwise you get clumps and agglomeration as the outside  gums swell and ‘seal’ the other dry particles inside. 0.5% is a decent amount, it depends on the viscosity you are trying to achieve.

Try again but put the gum in  just glycerin or a glycol first, mix that and then add the premix to water with stirring.

  • thanks for posting!  This will be interesting to see. OTCS are not my field so I don’t know exactly how it works, but I would assume anything labelled as an active ingredient has to have GRASE rating to continue to be an approved drug.  Seems like this will be hard to control though

If you only plan to make shampoo, do you need higher rpm? don’t you want to keep low speeds to avoid foaming? or is this a vacuum tank

    Where’s your preservative?

You don’t need the carbopol if you’re using salt, and that much salt will inactivate the carbopol anyway.

the camphor and menthol are best dissolved in an alcohol and that + the carbopol are probably creating your lack of clarity.

The eye irritation is also probably due to the menthol and your surfactant choice.  That’s about all I can speak to but hope it helps

I think it’s an interesting idea but would need some strategic development. Are you going to market it to cosmetic chemists only? Make it like a workshop where you teach others about emulsion science? Will you buy materials and keep stock-how will you charge for those costs?

@bill_Toge have you worked with Kobo? We have lots of supply issues with them, very long lead times, and they have provided the wrong color on more than one occasion. They are the only dispersion company I know of at this time.

@belassi and @bill_Toge I found one product that said “acetic acid, pyrus malus fruit extract”  and I think I feel most comfortable with that. This is just one example of a recurring issue we have  so I’m looking more for general ideas as well

@markbroussard  it couldn’t hurt to ask;  I figured since they are a food and beverage supplier and not a cosmetic one they won’t even know what an INCI is.

We frequently get  requests where clients want to incorporate a material that is uncommon to cosmetics (deer velvet, other popular supplement ingredients)  and sometimes it’s difficult to find an INCI name that seems suitable, so I was just wondering what other groups do in these kinds of situations

I’m also going to mention that those preservatives are most effective at lower pH (I shoot for 5.5 or lower). If you don’t have a way of reliably testing your product pH those may not be the best system for you because your products may not be at a range where potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate can function effectively

You may be trying to pack too much in to one formula.

For instant lift the products I know of are things like Easyliance (Acacia Senegal Gum (and) Hydrolyzed Rhizobian Gum) or some other kind of film former that will make the face feel tight.

you mean Boron Nitride? What are you trying to use it in?  I’m assuming some kind of makeup/ color cosmetic. There are powders like talc or mica, but without knowing what you want to do it will be hard for people to make good suggestions

I guess we can hope that their marketing is just talk to sell their products.  But this talk is still dangerous for giving people the idea that those concentrations are safe, and I hope the FDA takes notice. I’ll report them too

I would say cut out the essential oils first, 1% is a fair amount and I know personally even 0.2% geranium was strong for me in my formulas

    Where are you based?
If you can swap out for sodium phytate :https://lotioncrafter.com/products/sodium-phytate

    Biosil also carries Phytic acid

are you asking what is the equipment needed to disperse zinc oxide in castor oil?

Roller mill/Ball mill is my guess but I don’t work on sunscreens or color cosmetics.

I don’t know of any reason to use iodized salt in cosmetics, the iodine is for nutritional benefit.

we’ve used Jeen’s ICE-T-CPCS before, it’s a bit of a pain to work with. For me it had no issues at 5% with a good dispersion blade, but in another formula my colleague made it never thickened/dispersed properly.

@Bill_Toge oh my- makes sense but very different from what we could achieve without extra equipment! we are based in Florida so it’s worst case scenario of nice warm temperatures. Even in a “controlled” room we still can get pretty hot.

@ozgirl they are talking about a product they were overseeing development of at their last company. No commercial equivalent suggest to me that the pearl (regardless of what it’s coming from) did not stay suspended.

@Microformulation right now I’ve got a one phase solution, but maybe I should look into two phase and see if I can create the effect that way

@MarkBroussard was right, even if his first answer was short.  There’s no set rules on who owns what no matter where you are- it all comes down to creating and negotiating terms between the people involved. These are things you need to set up and come to an agreement with your friend on.

@Belassi is making the point that before you even bother getting into a drawn out discussion of who owns what, it’s worth investigating your approach. Thinking about these kinds of questions and researching  is to help ensure you don’t throw your valuable money and time down a hole. You’re on the front end of what will be a big undertaking-take time to really evaluate from many perspectives (including  legal rights, sales position, sourcing logistics).

I see cetyl and stearyl alcohol so there’s some kind of emulsification, but I would not expect this to perform well
