PharmacistAugust 1, 2018 at 6:13 am in reply to: How much to dilute 70% SLES gel so it becomes liquid? There are commercial SLES solutions at 26-27% which are liquids. My guess it should be liquid even at 35%, but it should be tested.
Regarding preservatives, I’ve seen without, but I guess it depends on the shelf life. -

PharmacistAugust 1, 2018 at 6:05 am in reply to: Ingredients to remove dark spots and even skin toneFor wrinkles, I would guess, elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid should help. These ingredients will not turn a 80 years old female face look like just as a 20 years old face, for that plastic surgery is the only way.

If you are looking to make cosmetic ingredients for your personal care, the safest way is to buy ready made bases and add some safe ingredients.
I would still not recommend doing this since you may not have the knowledge to do this. -

PharmacistJuly 30, 2018 at 11:38 am in reply to: Hand Sanitizer Gel not forming gel with hydroxypropyl guarI came across a new product, I’ll probably get a sample soon, it is optasense g82. Inci, acrylates/c10-c30alkyl acrylate crosspolymer. They say that it can form gels even with higher concentrations of ethanol if it neutralized with a suitable base. For example if you use TEA, a gel is formed with up to 60% alcohol.
If you want I can give you the presentation. -
urea is heat sensitive in water solution. In general urea is not stable in water solution.

Mettler is an expensive brand, so brookfield would be the best choice.
-
Most likely the cooling effect is due to quick evaporation.
-
You have to consider the technical aspect as well, such as time and temperature to dissolve SLES 70%.
-
You are already at the edge of lab scale (10 L)
You can go to 50 L batches, but this is not lab scale anymore. -
It should increase the viscosity since it is solid.

ozgirl is right. Stability test is a must if you want to have better shelf life
Olivem 1000 should be an expensive emulsifier, resulting in an expensive end product. It is a must to have much better shelf life -
“When I make formulations with CMEA, my skin peels a lot. “
Stop using it! Try the shampoo without CMEA. -
I can say, it is stable up to pH 11.5. One of our suppliers provides SLES at pH up to 11.5

Glad to hear that. Does DMAE have any restriction for cosmetics? What was the LOI you used, if you don’t mind sharing?

Sometimes, strange things turn out to be great 🙂

lol @Chemist77 and @Belassi, it is good to start the day with a laugh
@AFRIDI85, Why are you adding urea? It is usually unstable in water solution.
Also those ingredients given in grams, when the rest of the formula is in percentage, do not make much sense.
To fix a formula you have to know what is/are the issue(s) and this is done by making stability tests. -
@Chemist77, unfortunately I don’t have that ingredient in my lab. I will ask for it for the future projects where price is not set very low. Thank you
@Duncan, I was thinking to use NaOH only for the next trial, because i suspect TEA increases the viscosity more than I need. Right now the viscosity is 6.8 cP.
Thanks for the tip regarding hydroalcoholic gels. 🙂 -
The pH is 3.5 but in the end I have to have the pH of the shampoo 7 in order for the API to be stable,
-
Tried a sample, where I reduced TEA to 2% and added 0.5% of NaOH 20%. It worked fine.
I’ll try a few more combinations like this 🙂 -
Can’t believe I missed the cosmetic ingredient database. Thanks
From my tests the quantity of TEA ,to regulate the pH, is around 3%. I may use NaOH, but TEA was an easier and cheaper alternative.
@Perry, do you mind attaching that pdf here, I don’t have an account at the site you linked.
Thank you Duncan and Perry -

I agree with DAS. Vaseline plus essential oils at low % would do the job for beginners

I made a water based solution which had salicylic acid/sodium citrate and urea. The pH was 5.5 and remained unchanged for a few days.
I have seen some products in my local market with high concentration of urea (15%, 30%) which are w/o emulsions (creams). I think, the less water is used the better for urea is to be stable.
