It’s all how you shape the formula, I have a light conditioner with fatty alcohols, GMS and few emollients which thicken up nicely with the addition of CETAC 30%.

  • I am still dumbfounded about this problem, I would generally take the batch water. Throw in the sodium hydroxide, let it mix and slowly pour in the LABSA 96%. And there is absolutely no problems at all, why today only I made a 5 MT batch of dish wash liquid with the same procedure. Hopefully @ozgirl’s suggestions can do the trick for uou.

Still a molecule of choice for big multinationals, would still work in less sensitive markets.

Know few formulators in my region who don’t even know how many branches chemistry has. They are doing pretty good when it comes to making money but when they sit down for trainings/seminars, they are mostly clueless about what’s being talked about in terms of chemistry.

Polyox WSR 301 @0.05% and you would have the slip you are looking for.

Liquid laundry detergent + Happi + Shoaib Airf and google
read that and that will give you some good idea on liquid detergents.

Dowanols as someone mentioned in the thread above and a nonionic surfactant. Everything that Gunther mentioned, vinegar is for DIY stuff. Leave it out, IPA is used to defoam as well here. Use very low quantity of anti-foam if you think IPA is expensive.

A little of dimethicone could be of big help here, try @0.5% to start.

You can incorporate little PVP or any other film former to improve hold. Or if you can use a fixative.

As @ozgirl points out, the nature of fragrance will decide the dosage of solubilizer. At times 1:1 ratio works, other times it might go multifolds higher.

Yeahs sure, flaking generally comes from the film formers which become dry and brittle.

@Belassi I was just holding my breath for you to come up with something like this.

I suggest Aqucar IG 50 as Kathon CG is comparatively expensive and more of use in personal care generally. But it is indeed a very good preservative, make sure your pH stays below 8 if you are using Kathon CG.

Exactly no water and no preservative, kinda tricky this one.

Of course you can try Polyquaternium 10 @0.5% and it all comes down to performance you are targeting. With amphoterics as the main surfactants here, it is really difficult to comment on the final foam quality and profile. Think you are up for a lot of optimization.

First the foam quality I am not really sure of here, HPMC @0.2-0.3% might help and needs to be checked in the lab empirically. Polyquaternium 10 can be half of what you have used, sugarcane extract is going to be washed away and hence just a cost addition here. Salicylic acid needs low pH and Kathon CG has a pH restriction of 4-8, so you need to be there somewhere in between. A little of Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate can be added to improve the foaming but not sure how good it will turn out. APGs are another group that you can look into in case you are not happy with the final outcome.

I am rooting for Poly Sugamulse D9, the old workhorse PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil works as well and as Perry mentioned, a lot depends on your fragrance components.

Totally agree with @Perry, it can be used but the properties will be totally different. And on top of that you will have to use many other polymers to reach that viscosity. At least I have not come across any such formulation although I have used other polymers other than carbomer to get similar or better effect. But the short flow properties of carbomer are unmatchable and that is a very important aspect of a hair gel.

As Mark said, the acid should be solubilized and with the aid to keep it soluble. Else precipitation won’t be stopped.

Tocopheryl acetate is an oil soluble component, on the contrary it will suppress foam. But the use in formula is entirely up to the person who initiated this subject. Not even sure about the function of this benchmark which is being replicated.

A bit tough to bring together polyquaterniums and carbomers or other acrylate based polymers together. Except maybe in an emulsion type like I mentioned above and in a very low quantity, can’t say without a lab trial.

I used Aculyn 88, Acudyne 1000, PVP,  ultrez 20, AMP-95, 4-5% oils, Polysorbate 20, preservative, fragrance and that’s about it. Have a stable product with good fixation and no flaking.

Recently I have done hair gel cream which is a cross between a gel and cream. The results are great without flaking even though I have used PVP. It’s about choosing the right combination of polymers other than carbomer types. The product is a bit pricey but it works great with the inclusion of oils as well. I haven’t used any heavy emulsifier since the polymers comfortably hold the oils which are around 4-5% max. Polysorbate 20 works well here for me.
