@Stanley are you trying to copy a benchmark here?? I have been there but honestly had the same issues which you are facing now. Eventually I just gave up, even the customer couldn’t provide me with a benchmark.

Happens with all of us all the time, surely most could relate what it meant. -
@Sal I think for serum you can try carrot oil as well which is almost dark crimson, comes from CLR Berlin.
As for shampoo, I think @Gunther has given the best solution. The appearance will be something of suspended mica as you desire.
@Gunther I have used cetearyl alcohol in a shampoo base in the past, TBH not a big fan as there are stability issues, foam issues and much ado about nothin with it in the formulation. -
For shampoo you can use a polymeric opacifier like Opulyn 301 which is acrylates/styrene copolymer.
For oily serum it is indeed very difficult to suspend anything and as @Belassi pointed out the absence of yield factor in such oil only formulations. Best maybe you can mention ‘shake well before use’. Or someone can chip in with a more acceptable solution. -
Did you change supplier for Guar HPTC or any of the raw materials in the formula. Once dispersed and neutralized, it should not happen what you are facing.

I hope they have sent you the product TDS, if not please download from Dow. Com and you will get all the information there. They specifically mention octyldodecanol as the solvent to disperse Ethocel. I have a sample on my desk where it is an oil gel with apricot shell and i don’t see any settling of the scrub particles. The start @3-5% I think should do the job for you.
-
No methocel wouldn’t, it’s that grade only that I mentioned.
-
Did you check Ethocel 100 Premium from Dow??

-
You could use cationic like Chlorhexidine digluconate and use a cellulosic thickener to build up the viscosity. Just need to find the right cellulosic thickener, I have used from Dow range and it seems pretty acceptable.

The only way out here as per my experience is to add the EOs immediately after the surfactants if it is not a hot process. More mixing time might help along with high surfactant matter in the formulation.

Think the polymer has not been completely neutralized.
Generally for such formulations, I suppose Aqua SF 1 and Aqua SF 2 are used. -

@hollywoodstyle I think economical/cheap and sulfate free don’t go together until and unless you can sell a horribly underperforming excuse of a product labelled as a shampoo. -

I see that 0.1% Vitamin E as well, with such low surfactants this oil will crash the viscosity over time. As Perry said, readjust the surfactant ratio and in my opinion that Vitamin E isn’t a hero in this formulation. -
I too tried this one, knocked it off pretty nice but on standing the mica was knocked down to the bottom. I just gave up on the idea, not a very sellable concept in fragrance industry.

For me it varied from.0.5% upto 1% and I could never tell my customers a fixed ratio. Better go in little incremental dosages.

Its smell ammonia@Dtdang Look there are many buffers to replace Triethanolamine e.g. you could use NaOH, KOH, AMP-95, L-Arginine Neutrol TE, etc. The choice is yours and I suggest try to do your own research as well. Will help you to learn things in a much better way.
