Thank you all for your response! I will buy the Brookfield LVDV-E Viscometer. I was looking for the most commonly used in Cosmetic applications.

We get our fragrance from Givaudan and Eurofragance via a distributor here in our country. It’s oil-based and natural. Our colorants are also oil-based.

    Greetings to all!

I’ll be dosing the oil we use for our soaps with BHT. I looked into its recommended dosage and found out that it should be around 0.01% - 0.1%. I was thinking of using 0.05%. For those who have experience using BHT, is this dosage reasonable?
I know I need to do experimental studies to validate this assumption (which I will do as soon as I can get a hand on BHT). For now, I would like to get opinions/theories regarding this.
    Thank you very much!

    Greetings!

I am Al, from the Philippines.I am a Chemical Engineer by profession and I am currently working in a medium-scale Cosmetics Company here in our country. I am part in Quality Assurance and Research, Design, and Development. We produce a wide range of products from soaps, lotions, creams, facials, etc. but not for hair care and color cosmetics. I have just started learning the craft and I am very eager to deepen further my knowledge and understanding on everything about Cosmetics.
I have limited knowledge on cosmetic formulations and current cosmetics trends. However, I can possibly help with inquiries regarding scale up and processing (although theoretical and not based from actual experience).

I think you’ll have to add preservatives to your product for it to last long. Because even though you produce it in a true aseptic environment, when consumers use your product, the conditions will not be the same. However, you don’t necessarily have to use chemical preservatives. There are oils (tea tree oil for example) that have strong antibacterial/fungal property which can serve as preservative to your product.

@Belassi, Yes, our soap is drying to the skin but our consumers seem to like the drying effect. Though, I’ll make sample batches of your suggested blend with the addition of BHT.

@Bobzchemist, I seriously want your advice and by no means want to waste your time. Forgive me if I offended you in any way. I misunderstood what you meant by oil rancidity. I was thinking of the raw oil being rancid before it is saponified. Also, I’ve already read more on BHT. I guess I’ll have to dose our products with it.
    Thank you!

I agree with @Perry. You must have initial specifications of your product.

    1. Appearance
    2. Color
    3. Homogeneity
    4. Odor
    5. pH
    6. Consistency
    7. Viscosity
    8. Average Weight
    9. Assay
    10. Preservative content
    11. Antioxidant content
    12. Microbiological Test

Also, you must set acceptable limits. If in the course of your stability program the product shows deviation from the acceptable limits, then, you can conclude that the product failed the stability program.

Thank you @Belassi and @Bobzchemist for your response.

We only use Refined Deodorized Coconut Oil in our Soaps. As for the oil rancidity, we perform quality control tests in our Oil before we use it in our production. Also, before we release the products out from our Warehouse, we perform organoleptic evaluation in our soap bars.
It is only after a few months after product release that the incidences occur.
By the way, our packaging is just a unit box (gloss 80). Our soaps are directly placed inside the box. No plastic or wax paper used.
I will read more on BHT for now. Thank you!
