    Perry et al,

I am thinking of adding Vitamin E to a KOH based liquid soap but there seems to be several kinds of Vitamin E available at many different price points.  Tocopherol Acetate and d-alpha-tocopherol, soy bean oil are two I found.  A brief bit of info on the different types and suggestion for usage with the above described product would be helpful and appreciated!

    Regards,
    David

Well, the first question is why exactly is it that you are adding Vitamin E to your liquid soap … what function do you expect the Vitamin E to perform?

Tocopherol Acetate … Least expensive option if your objective is to prevent rancidity in oils in your formulation.
dl alpha Tocopherol … if you want to include a skin-beneficial antioxidant in your formulation
Tocotrienols … about 40X more effective than dl alpha tocopherol as a skin-beneficial antioxidant
Generally, you can include Tocopherols at 0.5% to 1.0%

    Mark,

Thanks for your reply!  I’m hoping for some skin benefits but price may ultimately decide which option to choose.  Thanks for the info on the types and I appreciate the usage rate information as well!  Thanks for your assistance!  Now I can try and find a supplier!

If you are just going for marketing claims you can use 0.01% of any of them.

Perry, thanks for the suggestion.  Pricewise, adding any of the four different types of Vitamin E would be too costly for this project.  I have never added an ingredients for “marketing claims” and this issue forced me to think about it for the first time!  So far, I haven’t done it in my product line and I decided not to.  Thanks for your input!
