I have made a sulfate free shampoo and put it on stability at 50 degrees.  It always has a white foam layer at the top of the jar.  when you tilt the jar you can see the foam sliding down the walls. I have tried removing several raw materials to find out what is causing this. is this normal with sulfate free shampoo system?

    water59%
    polyquat-10 -0.2%
    Betaine 5%
    cocoamidehydroxysultaine 13%
    Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate-20%
    Cocoamida MEA 0.5%
    Tocopheryl Acetate -0.1%
    citric acid 0.2%
    phenoexythanol/ethylhexylglycerin -1.0%

How do you mix the formula? If you are using a center stir mixer you should go at a slow enough pace to not pull air into the system. If you are using a hand blender…well, don’t use a hand blender.

I am using a regular center scientific mixer.  I am doing this at 500 rpm.  So this might be air coming up?  the “foam” slides on the walls leaving “streaks.”  When the jar is lightly shaken it dissipates through out the mixture. I don’t need to add more solubilizer/emulsifier?
