  • SC Isethionate or SC Methyl Isethionate and Taurates

    Folks,

I am trying to formulate a body wash with Isethionates and Taurates with CAB and I was wondering how an Isethionate with “Methyl” is different than an Isethionate without it?

Also, Oleoyl, Lauroyl and Cocoyl versions of the Taurates in what ways?  I am assuming (as a soapmaker) that Oleoyl would be from Oleic Acid which would be more gentle to the skin, Lauroyl would be from Lauric Acid which to some extent would help create batter lather and the Cocoyl from Coconut Fatty Acids would be best at creating foam?  I’ll continue to read up on all of these and check over the sheets from Innospec to help determine the percentages of each I would like to try but would appreciate any input from your cosmetic brains here about their functions!

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide!

From memory I think that the addition of the methyl group allows you to make clear products as opposed to only opaque products with the non-methyl isethionates.

Thanks, ozgirl!  Now that I am reviewing the Innospec Product guide, I can see what you’re saying!  All of the products with Methyl in them are touted as surfactants that will make either a clear or transparent formulation.  Thanks for another piece of the puzzle!  I appreciate it!

FWIW I just made a body wash with SCI 9% and it was crystal clear. This was unexpected because when I was melting the SCI in the surfactant phase it was a thick white paste; however, once the water phase was incorporated, it turned out to be a golden clear viscous liquid.

@thebrain: Please keep us update on whether it will stay clear after a couple of nights! I’ve tried a similar formula and my 5% SCI goes opaque after a few days!

Oh that would be interesting. I did my homework and the literature says that it shouldn’t recrystalize if it’s dissolved in akyl glucosides, but we’ll see! I’ll come back here and post the final results.

@AuroraBorealis: FYI, it’s been 10 days now since I made the body wash with 9% SCI and it’s still clear. The temperature is about 73F right now. I’m curious to find out what happens when it drops below 70, since I’ve heard that’s when SCI tends to recrystalize.
