    Hello,

I would be extremely grateful of any help with my query from you wonderfully smart folk.

I have made my own face cream for years and always make a batch to share with family & friends. Now, I and a few of said friends are going travelling for around 6-8 months and I have been charged with sorting out our face creams.

I always make a 500ml batch consisting of 70% jasmine tea, around 20% oils such as argon, and a few essentials, and roughly 10% beeswax.

I am happy with this formula but aware that it only lasts a short period kept in the fridge and obviously won’t last for our travel period. So I did quite a bit of research on preservatives (something I’ve never used/had a clue about before) and settled on adding Germall Plus liquid. However, when I explained to the seller what I would use it for he advised that I would need a selection of preservatives and reeled off a few more products that I should buy from him to make my creams last. This problems had not come up in my research and left me a little stumped.

Finally to my question then, is the use of Germall Plus enough to preserve my creams? I wanted to keep my recipe as natural as possible (but couldn’t find anything natural that could do the preservative job) so would like to check first before adding a variety of preservatives if this is actually unnecessary.

Thank you for reading and any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, Germall Plus should be enough for most any system.  Use 0.5% and you should be good to go.  However, every system is different and microbe are resilient so you should do a preservative efficacy test on the formula to be safe.

Personally, I’d add a chelating agent to boost the preservative efficacy. Sodium Phytate is a natural chelant.
