  • pH adjustment for w/o emulsion

    I need to adjust the pH of my water in oil emulsion.  I had read somewhere that the pH adjustment should happen in the water phase before it is added to the oil.  Is this true or am I able to adjust pH at the end without causing an instability issue?

    Correct, it’s best done before. If you want to measure afterwards, you’d have to break the emulsion and separate the water phase for proper pH measurements. This may be done for example by centrifugation, addition of more oil, or mixing with acetone or isopropanol ;) .
    Depending on the product and how you measure pH, it might work directly in the w/o emulsion… well, more or less.

    And preservative should also go to the water phase. The ones that are added to the cooldown are less effective in w/o (I guess because oil is the continuous phase?)

    @Pharma Thank you!!

    @ngarayeva001 good to know, thanks! I am using euxyl PE 9010.  The phases are being combined at 70-75C, will the preservative hold its efficacy at that temperature?

    PE 9010 is one of those rare preservatives that can be heated above 100C (as per schulke’s website). I use either PE 9010 or phenonip for w/o
