Home Cosmetic Science Talk Formulating Palm Kernel Acid vs. Palm Kernel Oil

  • Palm Kernel Acid vs. Palm Kernel Oil

As a point of understanding, I have come across ingredients listings that include “Palm Kernel Acid” not “Palm Kernal Oil”.  Having encountered “Coconut Fatty Acid” in formulas in the past and checking it out, I seem to remember that “Coconut Fatty Acid” contained some but not all of the fatty acids contained in “Coconut Oil” so I am assuming the same for “Palm Kernel Acid”.  I am seeking a clarification on this so I better understand the formula options open to me.  If anyone know about these “Acids” or has worked with them I would be grateful for their input!  Thanks!

The acid form will smell kind of rancid because it’s the FFA - free fatty acid - form. And will react instantly with lye. Not good for soap in my opinion.

And that would mean that it doesn’t contain glycerin?  The sources I found for soap were those commercially made that saponified first, then combined and pressed into bars and the fatty acids would have been added during that last procedure.  I see what you’re saying if it were used in cold-processed soap and didn’t smell very good!  However, it is used in shaving creams that are commercially made and in the percentage used the fragrance must cover that smell…

    Yes, no glycerin is produced.

Belassi, would you describe the odor is a “fatty” kind of smell?

I would describe it as a rancid fat smell. I have some oleic acid here and it is not nice at all.

Funny, I use Oleic Acid by the gallon and have never noticed an off-scent with that! :s
