  • Oil based hair serum

My mixture just can’t get the texture quite right. It turned out to be so watery (as in appearance) but too oily when applied. And the mixture didn’t mix quite well unless it’s being shaken before use.

I used argain oil and coconut oil, dimethicone (>50%) and IPM. Used two types of fragrance to hide the coconut’s smell.

Should my mixture go through the heating phase? I was hoping to get slighty thick serum in appearance but not too oily.

    Thanks,

    Rania

There are a couple of ways to get your mixture to feel less oily:

    1) Use less oil. You can do this by including a volatile component, like water, or cyclomethicone.
    2) Use oil that absorbs into skin/hair, leaving less on the surface
    3) Use a thickening agent that helps your product feel less oily, like silica

Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, IPM and keep coconut oil low as it tends to freeze as well at low temperatures. Try the 2 plant based oils within 5-10% max.

    Thank you guys! :)

Thinking to add dimethicone crosspolymer / dimethicone PEG 12 to make it a bit transparent but still playing with ratio. Let me know what you guys think, but other than that really appreciate above comments.

    Good day!
