Hair Styling Texturizing Powder… am I missing something?
Hello everybody!
This is my first participation here in this forum. I am a PhD in Medical Biochemistry but a newbie in Cosmetic Chemistry. Long story short, I have recently given up my academic life, and now I am working on developing Men’s Care products. I have got so much to learn from you, and hope to contribute with some of my knowledge too.
I’ve come across this new trend (at least here in my country).. Hair Styling Texturizing Powder. Here is the formula I’ve got:
Silica (from Rice Husk/Oryza sativa L.) - 70%
Shea Butter Ethyl Esters (Lipex Shealight) - 20%
Propylene glycol - 10%It’s sounding too simple.. Am I missing some ingredients? Isn’t there a need of a preservative?
Also what type of mixer do I use to homogenize all these powders with propylene glycol?

Welcome to the forum.If you want it to give any texture you would have to add some hold-giving polymers (VP/VA for instance), otherwise, it would just be a matte-effect powder.A hair powder with texturizing effects sound a lot like something out of Evonik’s Aerosil silicas, and it is therefore important to mention - not all silicas are equal. Aerosil R 202 and Aerosil R 802 are good for dry water formulations.Basically, you create your water phase, then under high shear mixing, you blend in the silica until you have a dry product. (In the lab, a blender or a disperser blade is useful).As for preservation - assuming you can create a formula with the ingredients you described, then strictly speaking, no. There is not any water and therefore microbial growth is not likely. I would still add some, however, in case people keep it somewhere moist. -

You are absolutely right. I need a copolymer.
Do you think that something like Acudyne 1000 (Dow) would work? If yes, what concentration would you suggest? For hair pomades I usually use 7%. Not sure about hair styling powder.

I don’t know if Acudyne 1000 would work (I have not worked with it before) - My best suggestion is to try it, probably in a similar or slightly lower concentration as you would a non-aerosolized spray formulation.

I have used Acudyne 1000 but in a hair gel with Aculyn 88. I must say that the hold property of this combination is unmatchable.

@Will I meant i have used Acudyne 1000 but in a water based hair gel. Never tried a product you are talking of.
