Hi, I am trying to make a detangling spray and so far my formula is really basic: polyquaterium 10 0.2%, Cethrimonium Chloride 0.5, some herbal extracts 0.2%, Vitamin B5 1%, preservative 1%, essential oil 0.1%.
Do I have to use silicones? Or it isn’t necessary? I would like to keep it natural. I was looking to an alternative and I have found Plantasense olive LD by Clariant. But if I have to solubilise it in the formula, I will need a great amount of solubiliser which will make my formula too heavy for a leave on product on hair. Any advice will be really appreciated. Thanks :)

@Michelle76 Just as a comment, silicones are not any less natural as Polyquaternium-10 or Cetrimonium chloride, and they have very particular properties not matched by other ingredients.

Also, even though Plantasense Olive LD is a nice ingredient, it’s very missleading that the supplier mentions everywhere the product being natural, since both of its components are esterified (one of them) and hydrogenated (both of them).

Now, going to the issue in your formula, it’d really depend on what your final performance should be. Perhaps your consumer like the effect of ony adding PQ and Cetrimonium, or they might want something additional, you have to test your initial formula first.

I’m a big fan of Polyquaternium-10 but it will not spray/atomize very well I’m afraid. Better to stick to smaller molecules not polymers for a sprayer. Amodimethicone would be the obvious choice here if the subject of silicone derivatives is still on the table.
